I have recently started volunteering at a local mental health center, where there are many schizophrenia patients. I have noticed many of them, during the worst of it, just kind of sit there and do nothing and say nothing. Is this kind of silence and passivity normal in schizophrenia? I am looking forward to hearing more.

Yes, this is something that is very typical in schizophrenia and it is referred to as catatonic stupor. It happens to many people in the middle of a schizophrenic episode, though the opposite - frantic running around and singing etc - can also happen. The truth is, schizophrenia has many faces. Does that answer your question?
