Galactorrhea is when a woman is producing milk even though she is not breast feeding the baby. The produced milk can come from either one or both breast and can leak with no stimulation or only by touching the breasts. Men can have it as well, but is rare. Some of the possible causes are: medicines, like hormones, antidepressants, blood pressure medicines, herbs, such as nettle, fennel, blessed thistle, anise and fenugreek seed, street drugs, like marijuana and opiates, hormone imbalance, tumors (usually benign), clothing that irritates the breasts, doing very frequent breast self-exams and stimulation of the breast during sexual activity but sometimes it is not possible to find the cause. Usually there is no treatment and the breast milk goes away with time. If galactorrhea is caused by a tumor, it can be treated with medicine or surgery.
