Actually, there are certain factors which put a patient in a greater risk category for getting a stroke. The most important are conditions affecting blood vessels and heart: atherosclerosis, hardening of walls of the arteries, uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol level. Other endangering conditions can be smoking, by increasing blood pressure. If a patient had any TIA- transient ischemic attack before, it is more likely that he can suffer a stroke. It is important to regulate blood pressure, avoid fatty foods rich in cholesterol, eat less sodium. Diabetic patients should keep sugar level under control.
