Hi everyone,

I've heard about this carotid endarterectomy thing, apparently, it is a surgical procedure that is used in order to prevent stroke in people who seem prone to having it. I learnt this from my friend who is supposed to have this surgery done in a couple of days. Now, we both know that this is used to prevent stroke but we were wondering if this is used for anything else, does it have any other benefits except for this one, that it prevents strokes in people? My friend is not really sure about doing it, he doesn't know how safe it is either.

Hey there,

I'm not really sure about this. I thought this was only done in order to prevent stroke, I don't know if it has any other benefits. I know that surgeons may recommend you to have a carotid endarterectomy if you have moderate (50-79%) blockage of a carotid artery and are experiencing symptoms such as stroke, mini-stroke or TIA (transient ischemic attack), or a severe (80% or more) blockage even if you have no symptoms.

Both of these things mean that you are prone to having a heart attack or a stroke, and therefore this surgery is advised to be done.

If his doctor told him to have this surgery done, then he should have it done. This is seriously not something to mess with.

If you want to talk about the risks that this surgery carries with it, I can tell you something about that as well. Stroke occurs in 2–3% of patients with no pre-procedure symptoms; in 5–7% of patients with pre-procedure symptoms such as stroke, mini-stroke or TIA (transient ischemic attack). After the operation he will be asked to move his arms and legs and be examined by nurses and doctors to make sure that he hasn't had any new stroke symptoms.

Hello! I think that carotid endarterectomy is preformed to prevent just and only stroke. At least that is what I know.  We are talking about the surgery that has been found highly beneficial for persons who have already had a stroke, more strokes or experienced the symptoms of a stroke and have a severe stenosis of 70 to 99 percent, according to statistics. In this group, surgery reduces the estimated 2-year risk of stroke or death by more than 80 percent, from greater than 1 in 4 to less than 1 in 10. So I do believe that statistic is correct.

Hey, look this is very serious. Like you could read some posts in here, statistics tells you all about it. I am not really sure what this carotid endarterectomy can prevent, but it helped me a lot actually. It prevented stroke in my case and I do believe that this is the only thing that it can prevent. Of course, The objective of carotid endarterectomy or shortly CEA is to prevent strokes and maybe something else. In the United States, stroke is the third leading cause of death. This statistic can be spread to the majority of developed countries.

Hello there. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a surgical procedure that is used to reduce the risk of stroke, and it is done by correcting stenosis in the common carotid artery or internal carotid artery. Endarterectomy is the removal of material on the inside of an artery. Now, about your question - carotid endarterectomy actually works better than treatment with medicine alone in preventing stroke for people who have symptoms that can be attributed to a 70% to 99% blockage of the carotid arteries. This is a surgery that lasts about an hour and the patient will likely stay one night in the hospital. Normal activities can be resumed within a week as long as the activities are not physically demanding.

Good day there. Well, beside a stroke I am sure that it can prevent some other heart issues as well. Surgeons can recommend you to do this surgery for so many things, and when they tell you that you should have it, you should because trust me, this procedure can be so good. For example, it saved a life to my friends wife. It can be very seriously and you should not definitely think that this is something that is easy, because it is not. Recovery process after this operation can last for about two weeks, sometimes even more. But that is normal procedure.
