I am 40 yrs old, and my last period was normal. But before that I have experienced abnormal periods off and on. I was even put on BC pills a couple years ago because of it. But now I am having a very irregular period unlike any other. When it started, it was brown, and that lasted for about 3-4 days, then I started bleeding heavy red blood. When I wiped, I had a very unusual blood clot, unlike any other I've had with any other period. It scared me so much I even had my husband look at it. It looked like a miniature T-Bone steak (minus the bone) it had the 'tissue color and marbled look' to it. Not just blood. He was so worried that he even froze it.
My husband was laid off from his job so we don't have health insurance now, and if I go to the doctor, I know they will send me to ultrasound again..I have been checked before and they have found nothing. That was a few years ago. I have had my period now for six weeks, it hasn't lightened up at all, I am so afraid that they might find something. I am also afraid that they might just do another US, and put me on 'the pill and send me on my way. I am also getting to old to be on the pill. What if it is something an US cannot see. My doctor's office is known for not being very thorough...but if I go to another one then I am a new patient and it will cost more out of pocket and I dont have the money. I am stuck and scared....what could it be?

Hi! I understand your situation but you'll need to see a gynecologist. The most common causes of excessive menstrual bleeding are: anovulation (not ovulating once per month), abnormal growths in the uterus (polyps or fibroids) or having a condition that increases bleeding throughout the body. And all these conditions require medical attention. You'll probably need a pelvic ultrasound and blood test done. I hope you'll get better soon.
