HI. I contracted herpes almost 10 years ago and during most of that time I did not have major trouble with it. I rarely had breakouts. But, this year, I’ve been on the pill to shrink an ovarian cyst and I’m wondering could the cyst be hitting a nerve and causing more breakouts than usual? I’m asking this because I’ve more breakouts in the last 6 months than in 10 years combined. Can hormones make a difference?

Your problem is, obviously, that outbreaks have become more frequent. Usually there is a trigger for this and the most common one is the stress. Fatigue, anxiety and incidental infections may also play a part so make sure you get enough sleep, eat good food on a regular basis and avoid smoking / drinking. But, of course, it is possible that the pill you are taking may be contributing too. However there are pros and cons as the ovarian cyst needs to be dealt with and the cyst itself is highly unlikely to be the cause of your problem. The bottom line is - either you talk to your doctor about an alternative treatment for the ovarian cyst or you use an antiviral medication to prevent the recurrences. Zovirac should be suitable for this purpose. Hope this helps.
