I posted the post below this one about tapering off amounts for the drugs Lortab and Klonopin. The docor has not yet mentioned stopping them but I have been on Lortab almost one year and benzo's for 4 years, Klonopin being the newest for Nerve pain and panic disorder. It really helped even more so than the Lortab. I just feel better om Klonopin. I am not so much worried about the Klonopin yet. But I want to begin to decrease the Lortab I have had a failed Back Surgery (Hemi-Laminectomy L5/S1) after a severe nerve root compression when the disc ruptured. I waited 5 months for surgery because they tried conservative measures first, and wound up doing permenant damage and causing scar tissue from all the irritation from the compression. Mt disc blew in 8/06. I was on very large doses of Lortab about 15 to 20 mgs every 3 to 4 hours right before surgery. After surgery I was on 15 mgs every 4 hours and have dropped to 7.5/500 every six hours now. I hear all the withdrawal horror stories and I am scared. At 46 believe it or not even having 4 kids, this was my first surgery, childbirth was natural and I have never taken a narcotic painkiller (just Tylenol and Motrin) until 8/06.
I want to slow down and see what the pain does, but after the 6th hour I get swaety and nauseated, I get flushed and grouchy. I get all sorts of weird feelings and the pain really does not come back, but my muscles begin to ache. After I take the Lortab within 30 minutes I am fine again. The same thing happens at night..One before Bedtime and because of the Klonopin I sleep till about 8 or 9 am. Thats a 10 to 12 hour time frame with no Lortab and when I wake up I feel awful till I take the Lortab and Klonopin and I am fine.
I would just love some input from someone who has done this and tried to or had to wean off and how they went about doing so. I sure do not want to go cold turkey and who knows with the way docs are with prescribing because of so many abuse issues he may put me in that position to have to one day and I would rather be cut down before hand.. How do I alleviate the withdrawal side effects. What is a safe taper off amount. Please if there is anyone out there who can answer this for me or give me any input I would appreciate it

For now, I think you should keep taking the 7.5 hydrocodone every six hours. Is the doc still writing you scripts? Is so, he will probably lower you the a "lower" pain medication, such as 5mg hydrocodone or maybe tylenol with codeine.

If he does try to make you stop "cold turkey", talk to him about gradually lowering your dose. Most docs will be agreeable.

If you are doing the weaning on your own, maybe try cutting the 7.5 tablet in half and take that with the klonpin(?sp). Also adding a regular strength tylenol if you need more relief. Try this "half" dose at perhaps midday.

You will more than likely feel a bid bad for 3-4 days after you are no longer taking any pain meds but it does get better. Try something over teh counter to settle your tummy,if that gets to be a problem.

There is also a non-narcotic pain med called, Ultracet, that works well. It settles down a lot of the withdrawal feelings that drive you crazy...restless legs, lack of energy,etc...

I hope this helps you some. There is tons more I could tell you but I will spare you my blabbing. Take care and good luck.

Klonopin has the most bizarre, horrible and terrifying withdrawals symptoms that your going to wish you were dead so I would withdraw from that one LAST because it's going to be the hardest one and ONLY by tapering down over a very long time. Hopefully with the help of a DR. but don't hold your breath, they act like they've never heard of Benzo withdrawal before. And Under no circumstance go cold turkey as I did. And that was with the blessing of every worker at our Mental Health Center. So if you want off both drugs, do them one at a time and make sure your completely healed from the first drug because your going to need every ounce of strength you've got to get through Klonopin withdrawal. Yes, it's that bad. It is going to be the most traumatic experience you will have ever gone through. Good luck to you. Benzo.org.uk check it out ....
