What causes hyperferritinemia in pregnancy? Can eclampsia be induced by high iron level in plasma? How frequent does it happen? I heard that hyperferritinemia in preeclampsia may cause maternal death. Please tell me more abouth theses conditions. Thanks.

Preeclampsia is associated with edema and proteinuria. It is hypertensive disorder in pregnancy. Eclampsia develops when preeclampsia is complicated with seizures and coma. Increase in serum ferritin has been reported in preeclampsia and pregnancy induced hypertension. Hyperferritinemia may be induced by non-utilization of iron. It is not common in preeclampsia and is not its cause.
Seizures that occur during the first trimester are not caused by eclampsia, they are usually benign. Maternal mortality in eclampsia is up to 40%.
