I hav had severe itching and gas-like pain and in my left side under rib cage for seven years...

It started at 21 years of age with a very sharp pain in the same place which made it hard to breathe. I woke up screaming. It lasted for a few minutes, then stopped. I could feel it throbbing, but slight to moderate pain only. THe doctor said that it was an inflammation in my rib cage and that it was common in women. I wasn't given any tests. He gave me antibiotics for two weeks. The severe pain went away but the itching never has. It has in fact intensified and spread to my stomach and lower back. I occassionally get strong gaslike pains when I'm dehydrated (usually if i drink alcohol i think). I can't bear to have any material or light touches on my side on most days. It's becoming an everyday thing.
