Hi there! I have a question about birth control. Im 18 and I just started taking them and Im on my 3rd week. Ive been feeling sick ever since ive been on them and was wondering if it is normal for me to feel sick while taking the pill. My other question is, is it normal to spot between periods? Because like I said, Im on my 3rd week and Im having brown spotting but i normally only see it when I wipe. If you could help me out that would mean so much to me! Thanks!

Hi mbaldwin, many times when a young lady starts to take birth control, it may take a few cycles for her body to get adjusted to the new hormones. Nausea and spotting, which is also known as break thru bleeding, is sometimes very common to a new bc user. If you can tolerate it thru the end of this pack, your next cycle may be easier on your stomach and your spotting may stop all together. If you feel really miserable and annoyed with the spotting you may want to call your doctor. Believe it or not sometimes a girl may have to try 2 or 3 different kinds of bc before she finds the one that she is most comfortable with. It is not out of the ordinary for this to occur. Your doctor will (or shouldn't) have no problem changing up your script. Just remember that if you are in the midst of switching your pills to another brand, make sure that you use back up protection for a little while.

If nothing else, the break thru bleeding is just plain annoying and could show up any time thru the cycle, it may come and go or come and hang around for a while, could even resemble a period. Keep up with pill thru to the end and then you should see a regular red period, start your next pack accordingly and see how you feel thru the cycle.
Many women just can't tolerate the upset stomach and that damn spotting is just a hugh disruption. I always had a sour stomach on bc so i would take mine a few hours before i went to bed, usually with my evening supper and very rarely was there a left over upset stomach thru out the next day. Find the time that works for you and keep to that specific time, every day. Try this for a while and if you are still not feeling well you should call your doctor. Within 2 months of starting and still feeling crappy, he will change your script for sure.
