Hi all. I’m 18 and I’ve had a boyfriend for 3 years now. We started making love some few months ago – of course, we were using condoms every single time. We really try to be cautious. Anyway, I’m thinking to get one of those intruterine devices used to prevent pregnancy… Somehow I feel I would feel more comfortable with that. So, I have some questions regarding IUD. When I can have it inserted, how long will that form of protection last and what are possible negative effects? Also, are there some reasons why I shouldn’t have it?? Thanks a lot for your replies..

As you probably already know, an IUD is a small device inserted into a woman's uterine cavity to prevent pregnancy. The most commonly used one is the IUD containing copper and is effective for up to 12 years. That is how long it should last. Regarding the insertion, I think that you are mature enough for it – still, I would suggest you consult your gyno on that matter. I will not mention all advantages you will have (after all, they are the reason why you want it in the first place, right??) but there are some possible disadvantages and side effects: it may cause minor pain and/or discomfort during insertion and removal procedures; possible PID or uterine perforation; and, the MOST IMPORTANT - NO protection against STDs/HIV. So, if you decide to have it, I would suggest both you and your sexual partner have AIDS and/or STD tests… Of course, there are some cases when you should not have an IUD inserted: if you have one (or more) of the following conditions
- Pregnancy
- Septic infection following childbirth or abortion
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Cervical, endometrial or ovarian cancer
- Current purulent cervicitis (gonorrhea or chlamydia)
- Malignant gestational trophoblastic disease
- Known pelvic tuberculosis
- Uterine fibroid or other anatomical abnormalities resulting in distortion of the uterine cavity, which is incompatible with IUD insertion
