Females who have not had children, how painful are the cramps on Mirena? My doctor wants to take me off my birth control pill (BP spiked on it) and put in an IUD, but he tells me that it will most likely cause REALLY bad cramps b/c I have a "tiny uterus" :-( , I don't know what to do. He said the only other option is to take two pills everyday for a long, long time IF my blood pressure levels out. Also, did you have bleeding problems once on it?

Hi:
I just wanted to add something here to be helpful, even though I don't have all of the answers that you are looking for. Here goes: I just wanted to add that your symptoms and experiences could be totally different that what someone else might experience. Don't count on a prescribed reaction so that you won't be disappointed. Have more conversation with your doctor. It sounds like he/she is being very specific with your care. Ask the doctor the "why" questions so that you can be more comfortable with the suggested medical plan. Best wishes. Please let us know what you decide and how you are doing.

I have the Mirena, and I honestly hate it. I have not had a child, and the insertion was extremely painful (note that I have had 2 surgeries on my cervix causing damage which in turn caused the thing to "slip" during insertion). Since then (about 10 months ago) my periods have been super irregular, I have some sort of discharge almost constantly, and I am constantly scared that I might have an ectopic pregnancy. Also, I have been doing some research (very informal; googled mirena) and it seems like lots of women are having crazy side effects that they did not realize were caused by the IUD but since having it removed have linked them together.
With that said, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. Some people really like it, some wish they had never considered it. If you're not sure about what your doc is saying, go get a second opinion.
Personally, I will not recommend it to any woman. That is based on my own personal experiences. You have to trust your doc and if you don't, get a new one!
Good luck!

I know how you feel about not being sure about getting Mirena. I haven't had children either, but had Mirena inserted 2 years ago. After trying many different birth control pills to deduce my extremely heavy bleeding and cramping (I was anemic and on pain meds just to get out of bed), my doctor suggested Mirena since it reduces the endrometrial lining in the uterus. When I went to get it inserted I was warned that it may be very painful since I never gave birth and I also had a small uterus (which shocked me considering how much blood came out of it every month). Other than a small sharp pinch I didn't feel anything during insertion, and had some heavy cramping for a day after. Other than that, I no long have periods, but now and then I get some cramping and my boobs get sore. Otherwise, I feel much better and I got my life back. Recently cramping has increased but nothing too bad. I hope this helps! I recommend talking to your doctor again after doing some research. Like the other ladies have said, everyone is different and it may be very good for you. I would much rather not be on anything, but my natural cycle is hell on earth.
Good luck!
