I have heard one friend of mine had problems with cervical mucus wearing IUD. I know there are different kinds of IUD’s and mucus might occur before and after the insertion. I wonder if there is any connection between progestin IUD’s and mucus. I want to have this implant, but I am not sure this side effect is something that I need nowadays. Can you tell me more about this problem with mucus after IUD?

I am going to explain you one research that has been done about different modifications of cervical mucus associated with IUD use. That was investigated in five women fitted with a copper IUD and five women with a progesterone-releasing device. Also investigated was the survival and viability of sperm in users of two types of IUDs. Mucus was collected from study subjects before IUD insertion and 3 months after insertion. After this, the quantity, spinnbarkheit, cellularity, and ferning capacity were assessed of this mucus caused by IUD. Women with a copper IUD in place showed no significant changes in cervical mucus measures after insertion their IUD. In contrast, insertion of the progesterone-releasing device significantly modified the spinnbarkheit and the cellularity of the mucus. It also caused dramatic increase of leukocytes is woman of this kind of IUD. Similarly, although the copper IUD did not produce significant variations in penetration test parameters, insertion of the progesterone-releasing IUD was associated with a significant decrease in sperm concentrations. These results indicate that progesterone-releasing IUDs produce important changes in cervical mucus. Beside this side effect, it could also reduce sperm penetration and survival. It is hypothesized that the negative effect on the cervical mucus may be a principal mechanism of action of the progesterone-releasing contraceptive device.

However, I'm 41, newly divorced and not interested in getting into a relationship for a few years. I'm seriously considering having it removed.

I've worn a Mirena for almost five years in October. It's due to come out. Only recently that I had a PAP and was told I have HPV (cancerous type) Did I begin to notice my discharge. At initial insertion, I would notice a fishy scent few days before my period and a few days after. Never gave it to much thought to it, but it was embarrassing. Just thought it was the hormones in the IUD. In that PAP exam they found I had BV and Cervicitis. I've read that one can test positive for HPV with an IUD (wishful thinking) and BV and Cervicitis. I'm having it removed on the 5th year, and not putting it back on!! I'm chronically anemic, and that was the purpose for the IUD. It worked great!! Haven't been anemic since. Didn't make a big deal or notice the discharge or the scent because I wasn't sexually active with a multitude of men. However, after having my PAP done and receiving the results. I've been paying attention to the discharge because of the results and the medication I was provided to treat the two infections. Now I'm scared out of my mind that the test missed something. It's a love hate relationship with my IUD. I just want it out. Now I'm lead to believe that all these years the scent was due to the BV and the cervicitis. I feel so dumb for not paying attention to my body and trusting the Men I've allowed without a condom.
