Searching the Internet I couldn't find the explanation about fluid retention in people who have suffer from SLE. My neighbor is suffering from SLE for last 15 years and recently he has signs of fluid retention. What is the reason for it and how to treat this swelling of ankles and kidney problems?

Hello, yes this retention is linked to SLE due the kidney disease called lupus nephritis. With this disease, glomerulal filtration is damaged resulting in decreased kidney function. Together with fluid retention occurs weight gain and swelling. Other than swelling, there is couple of signs or symptoms of lupus nephritis which does not lead to a pain or burning during urination.

Well if your neighbor is suffering from SLE than he is aware that he needs to consult with his doctor pretty often just to keep all the symptoms of the Lupus under control, of course if that is possible. This autoimmune disorder is very nasty and not just because there is no cure for it but because as time passes the symptoms of Lupus are getting worse.
So now it has come period of flare (this is period when your neighbor’s autoimmune system is hyperactive and in this particular case it is attacking kidneys healthy tissue). The best thing your neibghour can do is to visit his doctor for detail information. Let us know about his condition.
