One side is tight, nice and pink, while the other is long, protrudes, and is purple-y and wrinkly. It not only affects me physically, but emotionally also. I've been stressing about this from day one, and I really want labiaplasty done. I am only 16 years old, and I have no money. I am to scared/embarassed to talk to anyone about this. I dont go to the gyno.. so I cant talk to her about it. I want to do it when I turn 18 (so I can do it without anyone knowing) but I am afraid that I will not have enough money (due to college and whatnot).

I am also prone to keloids. I already have one, will having surgery on my labia minora be bad for me? Will keloids form?

Please help, thanks.

It sounds like you really should consult a gynocologist. Your health insurance may pay for it if you have pain associated. Many plastic surgeons can help you arrange a payment plan. Only a Dr. can answer your questions with any certainty. Best of luck

I juts turned 21 and I kno how you feel, i have the same problem w/ mine. both of them are the same size, but they hang out of me probably about 6cm. it is really embarressing and physically uncomfortable. but the emtional aspect of it is ruining my life.
I finally talked to my mom about it, she was pretty upset that it took me about 10 years to come to her w/ this problem. so she scduled me an appt w/ her gyno for a 3rd option (i have already had 2 consults w/ plastic surgeons)
the gyno was completely agaisnt seeing a PS, he wanted to do it for me in the hosp. He was completely comfortable w/ the op my appt is set. my only regret is waiting so long.

okay...first of all you should NOT be embarrased to talk to the gyn about this because that's his job. If you really want to solve this problem, you can look up gynecologists in your city online and make an appointment as soon as you can. Then you present them the problem. That's what i did. I had an appointment with one gyn who left me completely discouraged so i found another one and to my surprise he helped me with my surgery and also insurance paid for everything. I'm pretty open so i told my mom and my best friends about it. I'm actually going to see my gyn for a checkup cause i'm not completely satisfied with my results and i want to see if i can get another one done which i highly doubt...either way im very happy i had the surgery because now things are much much better then before. good luck & take care

I have the EXACT same problem as you! One of mine is nice, tight, pink, and normal looking, but then the other one is wrinkley, pinkish purple, and huge and sticks out, and I hate it! I'm considering telling my mom about so I can possibly get surgery. If anyone has had surgery to get your labia reduced, can you tell me about it? Do they put you to sleep when they do it? Does it hurt afterwards? Were there any problems?

Hey Girlygirl,

I had my labiaplasty surgery on july 29, and I have two bumps only on my right labia like the one you described having. Its been over 6 weeks since the surgery and my bumps are still very tender. I was wondering if yours eventually went away and if it did, how long did it take for it to go away? I talked to my doctor and he said that they are because I may still have deep stitches in my labia (although there are none that I can see). So I am not really trusting him right now. I just wanted to ask someone who has and hopefully had my problem. thanks

Hey Girl,

This is something I believe you shouldn't try to rush into. I'm twenty and I have been contemplating having this procedure done for about three years now, but i finally decided to do it (last week)!
Like you, I was also unhappy with the way my labia looked, I also found that it would get in the way during sex and wearing certain underwear was uncomfortable when it rubbed. But i feel like i should also tell that if you are worried about sex with a long labia like I was, that most guys really don't care about things like this, and many even think that long labia are sexy! But having said that, I still went about having the procedure, so I will tell you what I know about it.

I had it done a week ago at the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic. It cost me exactly $4200 for the procedure and about $60 for the antibiotics and painkillers. This is a lot of money, but I have been budgeting my money for about two years now, putting a little bit into a savings account every so often for this very procedure. If you are paying for university, that should probably come first. I have heard stories about people who have gotten this covered by insurance, but that never seemed like a realistic option to me.

At the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic (and probably most good clinics) there are two mandatory appointments before the actual surgery, and a $500 deposit must be made on the first appointment, and the rest ($3700) on the second. I have to admit that It was a shock to give away so much money, but i felt good knowing that I had been saving up for this procedure by putting away money that I probably would have otherwise wasted on something else (a cup of coffee here, an extra drink at the bar there..)

I was pretty nervous going into the procedure, but the staff was very helpful and the nurses were comforting. To me needles are no big deal at all, so I didnt mind the small prick of the anesthesia needle and it wasn't long before I was already waking up, with the procedure all done!

When i left, I felt no pain at all, but the area felt pretty swollen. About three hours later, the area began to feel sore, not in a stinging way but more like a dull ache. I took a tylenol 3 and in an hour, I felt much better. Depending on your pain tolerance, percocet is also

For the next few days, the swelling was about the same. Sitting was a bit uncomfortable, but pain medication make this a lot better. Even without the pain meds, I feel like the pain is bearable, mainly more of an annoyance or minor discomfort. Really, no big deal.

One thing that others interested in this procedure may not know is all of the instructions associated with prep and recovery for the operation. It is important to follow all the instructions given before the procedure (such as no smoking, drinking, vitamins, advil, or fish a week or two in advance) and after the procedure (take antibiotics as perscribed, apply cream twice daily, do sitz baths with epsom salts 3-4 times daily, no drinking, no hot tubs, and no sex for six weeks!), but these instructions are all inplace to ensure the success of the procedure, and I felt that they are not too difficult to follow.

So far I'm doing great, I'm happy with the results and I'm glad I did it. I think that I should also tell you that I did this completely on my own, and no one really knows that I had it done. However, It is mandatory to have someone drive you home after the operation (you cannot drive home drugged up!) and having someone there for you during your recovery is comforting and the safe way to go. Personally, I took a cab and then a bus home and I felt alright. Really, it depends on your pain tolerance and reaction to medications. Having the procedure alone might be a bit of a gamble, but I also felt that it was quite personal. I knew that if I told the people closest to me they would say that "i was perfect the way I was" and it was a bad idea, and unneccessary.

If this is something that you know you want, I would recommend going for it. BUT this is also something that should not be rushed into! I know exactly where you are coming from because I too wanted to have it done right away, and before i had sex. My best advice is to wait a few years- give yourself a few years to think it over and put aside some money so it isn't too much of a sacrifice all at once.

But also, do research, and have it done at a reliable place have performed hundreds of these operations, and have recommendations. Ask about the risks involved and make sure you consider these carefully! I may have had a good experience with this procedure, but others out there have not. Make sure that this is what you want. Remember that you are beautiful no matter what! It is a big decision, but if you think it will improve your life in one way or another, then no one should tell you that it won't.

I'm 17 years old and had the surgery about 6 months ago. I had always had problems with my labia when it came to discomfort and embarrassment. It had taken over two years from the time I expressed my interest in the surgery to my mom, to actually getting the surgery. I had it done in Dallas and paying for the surgery has been no easy task. My mother is in debt because of it and it has put a huge financial burden ever since. Now I am faced with an even bigger problem than before..

After the surgery I had the normal pain and swelling for the first couple weeks and it didn't go back to normal til about two months. I believe it has healed the way it intended to heal but I am still self conscious. I honestly believe the surgery did not help all that much. My labia are still asymmetrical and large. He used a laser but it's almost a jagged cut along the labia. He showed me before and after pictures of someone else and I know I do not look like the after picture of the other woman. Don't get me wrong, the surgery helped a good deal but I feel like I shouldn't be feeling this self conscious still after getting the surgery. It should be a one shot deal. I'm still very unhappy and almost feel like I could use the surgery again. Each time I went to my doctor he said it was healing normal and perfectly and the latest time I expressed my residing concern in the situation. He said I shouldn't worry and that I was fine. I know it could be better though, I still have the discomfort and am very self conscious about it. I still tell my mom my concern but she looks at me like I'm helpless and I hate telling her about it cause I know it only worries her. I know there's nothing more she can do and I do feel helpless.

Do I keep persisting to the doctor that I'm still unhappy? Is there anything more he could do? Anything will help!

Hi,

I am 34 years old and considering having this procedure after years of mulling it over.
Having surgery doesn't phase me, but I am most worried about mishaps, complications, scarring...

From what I've read, scarring is supposed to be almost "invisible" - what exactly does that mean? and within what timeframe? I am also planning on being as secretive as possible (I will probably only tell a friend), but the last thing i want is to be with a guy later on and have him notice any scarring. It would be embarrassing to explain!

Have any of you had any other problems, or had to have repeat procedures? I am considering traveling abroad for this for a couple of weeks and staying with a friend, so repeat visits to the doctor would be impossible. I could go to my gyno where I live, but only for minor things like removing stitches and such.

I am also curious about the type f procedure. Some doctors do the "V" cut and others cut straight across. Which is safest and leaves less scarring?

Help!

Thanks!

Depending on your surgeon's technique, experience (has a lot to do with it too), and skill will determine results.  I have worked for several doctors in the industry, some were great and some were not so good.

I have seen excellent results and some that were scary!  So it is completely understandable for you to be concerned with the scar and appearance.  Even if this is about comfort, there is still an aesthetic component naturally.  You may continue to see some improvement with time (have heard women see final result after a year).  Everyone is different and will heal differently.   So keep that in mind too.  You can see from these labia surgery images that some doctors use laser, scalpel, rf and even scissors.

You can get great results from either, but the opposite is true (not so good results).   Your doctor will have an impact on that as well.

In regards to wedge labiaplasty vs trim, both are viable options.  It really depends on your anatomy and of course your surgeon's experience with the actual procedure.  SO you want to know how many they have done.  10 is not a lot.  This area is delicate and not one that you should entrust to just anyone.

Hope this helps.  Keep doing your research and may you find the option that is right for you!
