I have a 16 year old, will be 17 next Wednesday, who has been suffering from a herniated cervical disc for 16 months. We've tried oral steriods and PT with no luck and now have a consult with a Comprehensive Spinal Surgon tomorrow morning. We've had four opinions and everything we've been lead to believe at this point is that he will be having surgery in the next week or two. We are told that this is a very rare condition for someone so young (he was 15 when it started) and we have no idea what caused the injury. Has anyone had experience with someone this young having this type of surgery, I'm trying to find out how long he'll need to be out of school as I am worried about him getting bumped around in the hallways, he goes to a HUGE high school. I know I'll find out more at our appointment tomorrow but thought I'd join here for more information.

I haven't known anyone this young having the surgery but I have known someone that young receiving chiropractic treatment and getting better. Have you tried a chiropractor? I'd try a low force chiropractic technique, like Activator Methods, before trying surgery. Surgery is permanent and he's only 16. It seems odd there is no correlating injury.
