My job involved an awful lot of typing and at the end of a hard day's work, I often find that I lose all feeling in my fingers. My fingers go totally numb, especially in my right hand, though I do type with both hands. Is this normal and more importantly, what can I do to prevent this from happening? Sometimes it is so bad that I can still feel it the next day.

I think you have a case of Repetitive Stress Syndrome on your hands there, literally (hahaha). RSI can be quite a problem, and can affect you in the long term. It is important that you do something to alter the movements you make, as soon as possible before the RSI progresses even further. Get an ergonomic keyboard to start with, to see if that does any good.
