A colleague of mine has requested that he be excused from certain activities in the workplace due to the fact that he suffers from lupus. I have to say that I don’t know much about lupus, other than that it is a serious disease. What are the basics regarding lupus on the hands? Is there anything in particular that I need to be aware of? Is lupus on the hands something that is permanent? Is there anything that I (and other colleagues) can do to help our co-worker?

People with lupus can have flares on various parts of their bodies, including the hands. I guess that you are hinting at your fear of being infected. Rest assured that lupus is not a contagious disease, and as such you will not be infected. For the patient, these flares can itch, burn and sting. Washing hands, or constant contact with foods or chemicals, may aggravate the symptoms. The best you can do for your colleague is to keep them from using their hand as much as your job will allow!
