I am a concerned grandmother to be. My daughter in law suffers from lupus, which I don’t really know that much about but I know that she has to take treatment for it on a permanent bases, and that she has flares of lupus, and stages of remission at times. Though I have been told that my grandbaby will most likely be healthy, and has got only a minor chance of developing lupus, I would still like to learn more about lupus symptoms and the signs in children. What do I watch for? Is there anything else that I can do?

You sound like a very loving grandmother, and I can understand that you are worried for your grandbaby. However, lupus very rarely affects children and there is a very small chance that lupus will be passed on by carriers – a five to thirteen percent chance. I think that your daughter in law can probably provide you with all the necessary information. As someone with lupus herself, she will be able to tell you all about the symptoms. Lupus is a disease that is greatly misunderstood. I was diagnosed with lupus almost ten years ago, and since then, people around me have thought that lupus is related to all kids of illnesses, including cancer and AIDS. None of that is true. Please listen to your daughter in law, and you will clear up most of these questions. Hope that helps.

I am sorry if I offended you in any way. I did not mean to sound judgmental. You are right that I don’t know much about lupus. I just wanted to prepare for the arrival of my grandbaby. Outbreaks of lupus look extremely frightening to me, and I have been told that the disease can be life threatening in some cases. Of course, I would like my grandbaby to be helpful. I’ll talk to my daughter in law. Any other information would be appreciated.
