Can anyone answer a query for a newbie that is on Metformin? What are your experiences on this medication? I have never been on a medication for high blood sugars before and I am a bit apprehensive about it. Will it cause me to have hypoglycemia? Will it cause ay side effects like passing out? I have been a type 2 diabetic person for 3 years. I had lost weight in the past, but now that I am on psych meds for bipolar disorder, I have gained the weight back and my diabetes has worsened. i am really upset about it. I can't stop taking my psych meds though. I try to exercise but I eat a lot so that doesn't help any. If you have any information on this metformin med, it would be great. Then I will know common side effects of this stuff.

Usually the common side effects that metformin is known for are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These occur during the first couple of weeks or so and usually subside within this time. You may lose a bit of weight with this medication so in this way you may benefit from taking it. It is a popular diabetic medication because of its benefit of not causing hypoglycemia. There are other diabetic meds that do cause hypoglycemia so I think doctors prefer prescribing metformin because of this fact. I hope that you benefit greatly from taking metformin. If you find that the side effects are too much, you can see about taking another type of metformin called Metformin SR or Metformin MR. They both offer a slower release of the medication into your system that may reduce the side effects experienced. You should see how you do on the regular metformin first. I hope that it works out positively for you.
