I get mid-cycle bleeding too. It seems to be more common than not. It didn't start happening to me until after I turned about 27 or 28 and after getting diagnosed with PCOS. The spotting/bleeding is accompanied by mild/moderate cramping. I have never been pregnant, and my bf and I never use birth control, but are not TTC.

I am 20 years old, and recently miscarried at 11 weeks, and had a D&C at 14 weeks.. One cycle after, i noticed some mid cycle bleeding, and I know it was during to ovulation (I've been charting and using ovulation predictor kits). I thought maybe it it could just be because they did scrape the lining of my uterus, and iknoe it can take time rebuild. and maybe the ovulationn stimulated the bleeding? I"m still not sure, but with doing research on both of these things (potential causes for miscarriage and ovulation spotting), the one thing I did find, is that it can be due to low progesterone.. "Ovulation is triggered by lutenizing hormome from the brain. The remaining follicle then starts to produce progesterone which makes the endometrium (lining of the uterus) nutrient rich with small blood vessels for the child to implant. If the follicle is of a small size or poor function, the amount of progesterone will be too low to stabilize the lining of the uterus. Women may get “ovulation bleeding”. The estrogen level has been sufficient in the first half of the cycle to build up the lining but the progesterone does not pick up quickly enough or at sufficient levels to sustain the endometrium. The amount and the timing of the progesterone is vital to sustain a pregnancy". mid-cycle bleeding is one of the symptoms of low progesterone, and you can search "progesterone deficiency symptoms" as well, and maybe this could be the right answer for you.. Hope this is helpful. I've just purchased some natural progesterone cream, and I'm going to see if this helps me..

This past month, I bled during my ovulation time. Since I care about the planet and don't want to waste all the packaging and disposable products involved with bleeding, I use a "Moon Cup/Diva Cup" which collects the blood inside (no strings attached so I can still hot tub & swim, and I've never have had to buy another menstruation product in years because it's reusable!). Anyway (I do go on...), it collects the blood so I am able to see exactly how much I'm losing, and in this case, it was about an ounce (2 tablespoons) a day for 7 days! It was vibrant red (between bright & dark) the whole time too...What???
So I visited Planned Parenthood and had a full exam (Pap, blood, etc.) and I'm waiting to hear back (or NOT which means all is negative!). But what I learned is that it could be gonorrhea, chlamydia, or other sexually transmitted diseases (HPV perhaps?) which can lay dormant or exhibit no symptoms whatsoever. Could also be ovarian cysts or some other type of cancer. Could be many things, anyway, I will post exactly what it is if I get a call back. Today is Mother's Day, May 8, and I will hear back by next Monday, May 16.
Oh and I've also been supplementing with Floradix for Iron during this loss. Floradix is an all-natural, whole-food supplement (not isolated nutrients, which don't work as well, like "vitamins & minerals") which seems to help many people I know.
I would suggest to everyone to see a gynecologist immediately to check up on themselves :-P

Bleeding does NOT guarantee that you ovulated. I struggled with PCOS for almost 18 years. I had fairly regular preiods (though they tended to be short) and yet tests showed I was annovulatory.
WHY would you think that your eggs aren't CAPABLE of fertilizing just because of the PCOS? PCOS causes insulin resistance which allows excess's of insulin attack the ovaries and create cysts. The imbalance of hormones caused by the interference with the ovaries can cause some women to become annovulatory. Doctors can help treat PCOS with Glucophage (Metformin) to balance insulin levels and therefore balance hormones. They can also encourage ovulation with the use of Clomid (Clomiphene Citrate). I had surgery at one point to remove cysts and was 4 weeks pregnant when I went in for my 6 week surgical consultation. My Dr. said that ANYTIME the ovaries disturbed like that you are MUCH more fertile than normal, just as you are extremely fertile right after a pregnancy terminates or you miscarry. So.....
Lower back pain and cramping mid month can be very different for a woman with PCOS. While most women would consider it a sign of ovulation (the releasing of the follicle can cause a secretion of fluid that can cause cramping and discomfort behind the uterus (thus some back stiffness) until the body reabsorbs it.
In a female with PCOS we tend to form tiny cysts on the ovaries that don't rupture each month. A build up of persistent tiny cysts can cause a lot of lower back pain and cramping.
I got pregnant twice while having PCOS. Once I lost my weight (dropped just over 200lbs) and got in shape the PCOS was gone, and my periods were a lot more regular...but I still didn't ovulate with any regularity. So when we decided to try to conceive one last child (I'm 41) my doctor put me on Clomid with an HCG trigger shot. After struggling for so many years, we're now expecting Triplets (with 1 additional 'unknown' shadow outline they're watching for a possible 4th.
