Take Advil people! I have the same pain but have been taking Advil. Yeah, it it very, very, very sore, but painkillers help. Also, I got the shot four days ago and it still really hurts.

I had mine two days ago and felt nothing apart from a small pain which is like a minor pulled muscle. The jab itself didn't hurt either. There is still a little pain but I have had full use of the arm ever since I had it done.

I got a tetanus shot/whooping cough combo 3 weeks ago and by the 2nd day my arm was extremely sore and I could barely move it and was in constant pain for more than 3 days ( 7-8 with no movement and 10 when I moved it)- more shoulder joint pain than muscle pain. The pain very slowly went away, a little better each day. I would say my arm is now back to 95% of normal BUT 2 days ago my other arm started with the exact same pain, same area. This is no fun and I am not sure I ever want this shot again. I have always had a reaction to tetanus but nothing like this. When I called the DR they said to ice it and up my Advil. Hate taking so much Advil but feel I need to at least for the few days where the pain is at it's worst. No one I have talked to has had a reaction as bad as I have.

Most of these reactions I would say are very uncommon. Working for years in various areas of the medical field I've seen and given many tetanus shots and most are only minor reactions. Usually the pain, tenderness and swelling are around for about 3 to 5 days. Taking some Ibuprofen should help a lot. Tylenol would work also, but Ibuprofen/Motrin has more anti-inflammatory properties.

Whenever your given one of these shots, you should be asked which is your dominant arm/hand and the shot should be given in the OTHER arm due to the pain and swelling issues. This way it doesn't affect you so much in day to day life. Also, the effects of the shot can be longer or exacerbated by having it in your dominant arm since you use it and move it much more than your non-dominate.

I would say that the side effects of the tetanus shot are much more pleasant than getting Tetanus or Whooping Cough. If you do get the vaccine and have any side effect other than some pain and tenderness, you should contact your Doctor to be sure your reaction really is just a bad one to the vaccine and not something more serious. Also, 2-4weeks after the shot, if you are still in pain or are experiencing any kind of muscle loss where you got the injection, you should contact your Dr immediately.

Hope this helps a little. :-D

I had tetanus in one arm and pneumonia in the other. Later that day the pneumonia side was sore and I didn't feel anything in the tetanus side. the following evening the tetanus side was so painful and now the end of the next day and I still can't use my right arm. I have had several tetanus shots in my life and don't ever remember it hurting this bad. I couldn't sleep last night because every time I moved the pain woke me up. It seems that the pain is only getting worse each day.

Hi, me too, I had glass in my foot and that is why I went and they gave me a tetanus shot also and my foot is fine but my arm hurts so bad I was up all night and I still can't touch it after 3 days! OUCH! I called the office and they said it is normal, I thought she put it too high in my arm, almost in the shoulder.

I got a tetanus shot about 36 hours ago, and I woke up in severe pain along my right side, including my neck, shoulder, side, and arm.  I read that the after effects go away eventually, but I can't stand the pain. I'm taking tylenol. My doctor talked me into getting the shot, which I didn't need right then.  No injuries.  Just hadn't had a shot, ever, I think.  I feel like I have locked jaw.

Only Advil workd for me, 4 at a time 3 times a day. My Dr had me double the max dose on the bottle. The really bad pain started to subside after 2-3 days but the whole process of getting pain free was very slow - just a little bit each day for me. Mine then went to my other arm and that was just as bad. Don't think my shoulders have fully recovered, they just don't have the range of motion they used to and it has been 3 1/2 months since I got the shot.

It is now 10/17/12. I had the shot 8/10/12 after a car accident. It STILL hurts, so much so that I don't know how I will get the flu shot this season (I understand the new one is painful for a few days). And I still have a lump from the shot. It only seems to hurt when I lift it like in the position of washing my hair. I 'm to the point now where I think I have to see my doctor.

I got my tetaus 10 year booster more than a month ago and I still have a dull ache in my arm and I have sporatic tingling running down my arm into my hand since then. I didn't have any issues with my arm before this shot. Anyone else have this type of reaction? I am so upset about this and hope to God that my arm goes back to normal soon....getting an EMG to check the nerves. Unbelieveable....

I work in healthcare and received my shot as a preventative.  I also cannot sleep for long periods of time and to lay on that particular shoulder/arm is out of the question.  It has been a good month and a half since receiving it and I still have constant tingling, some numbness, weakness, always dull to moderate pain.  Sometimes severe, exspecially at night.  What used to be simple task - washing, doing my hair and make up, holding a coffee mug, carrying this or that have all become challenges.  How long should I expect this ?? Does it eventually go away.  Hate to call the Dr.  I feel like such a weinee, and like I should just suck it up.  However, I also realize this condition is not getting better.  In fact at times I think it is becoming worse.
