Two days before Thanksgiving, I had a tetanus shot and a pneumonia shot in my right arm. My arm was extremely sore for the next two days and right at Thanksgiving, I started to have the chills and I had go home. At 1am in the morning, I was shivering uncontrollably, and was now having a hard time breathing. I called 911 and was taken to the emergency room and hospital, where for the next 5 days, I contended with a 102 degree fever.
At the hospital, I could barely stand or walk, and I also developed a blood clot in my leg. I had numerous CAT scans done and by the end, one of my doctors thought that I probably had some sort of reaction to the tetanus shot. For two weeks after I was out of the hospital, my right arm hurt severly where I received the shot and I had a really hard time functioning.
So was it worth it to get the Tetanus shot? Absolutely not in my view. Aside from the pain, there is the lost income from my job, and over $5000 I am going to have to pay in medical bills. I have never been too concerned about getting the whooping cough or tetanus and this experience was absolutely awful. You've been warned-this could happen to you!

I got the tetanus shot on Friday, Feb 8. On that day I was told that the shot would be discomfort for a few days. I started feeling pain that night couldn't sleep, pain just felt so severe. The next day couldn't move my arm still in pain. It has been 5 days now still in pain but not as severe as the first day. I feel the tingling feeling in my shoulder in arm in which I can't put my arm up in the air. I am so concerned at this time. My Dr. said I needed it because it has been 10 years since the last one. I don't remember pain when I received the first one.

I'm really not sure where some of these people are getting their shots done. I went to my local health department clinic and got two immunizations today. I received by Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) vaccination, and dose #3 of the Hepatitis B vaccination (apparently I didn't have this one done as a child). Anyway... I made the mistake of reading some of these crazy posts online before going and was mortified of the Tetanus (Tdap) shot... and guess what... it did NOT hurt at all. Honestly it turns 50x more when you bang your toe into something. The shots felt like a tiny bit of pressure and lasted for maybe 2 seconds each and that's it. I did feel a little light headed afterwards and needed to lay back for like 3 minutes but that's just a natural reaction and had nothing to do with anything other than my immune system reacting to the vaccinations.
If you feel nervous while you're driving there or waiting in the doctors office, just think of all the people around the world who have died b/c they didn't have the luxury of getting these vaccinations like you're about to. Once I thought about that, and thought about what those people must have gone through, I felt bad for even worrying about a little bit of pain from the shot (it put things in perspective for me). After about 15min in the waiting area they called me in and I met with the nurse, she explained the shots to me and gave me some light reading material about them while she prepared them. When she came in I made a point to not even look at the needles (I never saw them), I looked away when she gave me the first (Tetanus) shot and after she said "Ready..", I said "Yeah, go for it", then I felt that tiny bit of pressure I mentioned before and it was over, she repeated the same process for the second shot on my other arm and boom.. DONE! No joke, it's a piece of cake.. if you're like me, whatever you're imagining is probably 1000x worse than it actually is. So stop reading, don't look up any more stories online!! because let's face it, we're all only reading from the 1% of people who have a bad experience, so why read those and psych yourself out? If you need to, read this post again and remember that it's nothing.. it won't hurt at all.. and you'll be protected from these stupid infections for years. You've got this.

i got a tetanus shot 6 days ago. it hurt for a few days, was a little sore and tender, then felt as if it was going away. today I only slept 3 hours because the pain got so bad. I can't move it to do basic things like shower. I am using it to type now with much strain. I don't ever want to get shots. I hate doctors. :( Booooo. There is no redness or inflammation or swollen areas.

Research the potential long tem effects of a tetanus shot gone wrong and you wouldn't be so glib about telling others to "suck it up." This vaccine usually causes , yes, but it can also lead to extremely advserse reactions that are life threatening. It is not savvy to ignore distessing symptoms of vaccines of any kind. Best to annoy your doctor than suffer or die from reactions one is too embarrassed to ask about.

Hello, Hurting in Ohio! Sorry to hear of your severe reaction to your tetanus shot! Yikes! I hope this finds you well and painless. I had mine eight days ago after a tiny little puncture wound from a cat bite that was obviously going into rapid infection. The pain didn't start until several days later, which made it kind of more scary, actually. And just today, there is some swelling at the injection site, along with my feeling really wonky, like almost out of body the last two days.. I've done some research as to the side effects of the shot and I think it is remarkable just how badly one can be effected and the doctors don't inform us . My doctor shot me in the right arm wihtout asking which was my dominant side, which seems like it should be a standard question given the nature of the after effects. I brought in blood test results from my allergist showing that I was susceptable to pneumonia, which accoring to my research, leaves me a very UNLIKELY candiate for a tetanus shot as pneumonia is one of the events that a tetanus shot can bring on. I had no idea that there was such a long wating period to be sure one is out of the woods regarding reactions. And some of them can be life threatening. I already immuno-compromized and feeling like I'm sitting on a time bomb. If you can, i'd love to hear how you are doing and hope that all your symptoms have cleared and your concerns have evaporated. Blessing, Hurting in Connecticut
