Hi, my mother is effected by polycytemia ruba vera, and all informatins we get about the disease and treatment seems to be contradictory, except that it is malignant. What is polycytemia ruba vera like?

Hi, as you didn’t mention whom did you contact and what kind of information you were provided with by now, I don’t know what is contradictory. But, generally polycytemia ruba vera is a myeloproliferative disorder of unknown cause. It affects production of red blood cells in bone marrow. Malignant disease of bone marrow are not rare anymore, unfortunately. Hyperproduction of red blood cells leads to increase in red cell mass and total blood volume, associated frequently with enlargement of spleen, and increased production of other blood cells, such as white blood cells and thrombocites.
