I am 60 and had a midfoot fusion 4 months ago. I tried steriod shots, they were so painful, and only worked for a few weeks. The Doctor said the arthritis was so bad my only option was to fuse. I never thought I would, but am so happy I did. I chose to be non weight bearing longer than the 6 weeks suggested. 8-10 weeks is better to make sure it fuses. My foot still swells and turns a little red, that is very uncomfortable, but I walk without pain now, and I can tell I will be great if I can be patient a few more months. I can wear tennis shoes now and get around just great, the recovery was beter than I expected, just long. The worst part was rehabilating all the muscles in my foot and leg that I had not used for months.

I recently severely damaged my front half of my left foot in a skateboarding accident. Impact was from the big toe side, pushing my foot outwards, breaking two metatarsals and ligaments. I'm currently in hospital waiting for surgery. I've been told metatarsal fusion, plates and wires. Basically I need to realign the bottom half of my foot. I've been told it could take 18-24 months for the foot to be free of pain and swelling. Sounds like I'm in for a long recovery. Any advice from people who have had something similar would be appreciated. This has created a whole heap of problems for me, work, house, no income support, so I'm in for a challenging period of my life.

Hello my son was born with a tarsal coalition in one foot. He plays basketball and during his 11th grade year he decided to run cross county with his high school. This was the first time we discovered he had a problem with his foot. Because it did not bother that much him he did not want to get the surgery. As he got older the foot got heavy and it limited his motion. Thank God it did not lock as it would have later in life. Now hes19 years old and decides to get the surgery. He recovering well but is very frustrated and wonder if he will ever get back to 100 percent.

Hi there, I was considering this procedure as I too have Arthritis that has caused a huge bump on top of my foot. I play Pickleball on concrete and it has got to the point of constant throbbing. After all these success stories, I will go ahead. So done with pain and pray I can quote another success story. I am a young, vibrant and very active 60 year old and wanting to travel etc. This injury is totally debilitating.

So happy that I finally had someone say they were happy they had the fusion. I am 70 very active but have horrible artritius and my last option is mid foot fusion. I am getting a 2nd opinion in 2 weeks. My concern is my job that I have had for 30 years in sales. Can I be laid off or let go if I am off for 8 weeks? Also, I have read some horror stories but like you... I will do everything my Dr. advises me to do. I also have it in my other foot so am facing surgery again. I cannot walk flat on my feet. Must wear a low heal constantly, even when cleaning the house, I am at a crossroads but thanks so much for your information.

Im with you....If I have to live with this much pain in my feet I'd rather be dead! I am considering mid foot fusion as my last resort. I still work in sales so it will affect my job and i am just hoping all will go smooth so I can continue to work after the fusion, I will do everything my Dr. tells me to do. I also had breast cancer 2 years ago and honestly would rather go through that than this. The drug that i have to take that reduces estrogen also increases the arthritis. I am a very young and active 70 and have lots more I want to do. Thanks for any reassurance on this subject.

Hi there. It looks like you may have had this done a long time ago. I was wondering how you are doing. I too love pickleball and tennis and all sports and am only 55 and it's horribly painful to have fun anymore. I hope you are doing well and was wondering if you could let me know your thoughts about the surgery. Would you do it again? Are you pain free? Pros and cons? It has come to the point where some days I can barely walk my dogs. I want to do so much more in life and it's so sad to be in so much pain. Thank you for considering touching base.

Hi all, I came across this forum today and I know it's an old thread but I've just had ( 6 weeks ago ) a midfoot fusion to correct a long standing injury that was caused by a dislocation. The surgey was 2.5 hours, I've had three MT fused, three plates and screws. So far its been pretty darn good, I've not had any pain as such and I'm due to have the K wire removed and transition to a boot. I've been trying for a few years to have the procedure done and even though the journey isnt complete yet, I'm glad I had it done
