I have experienced the same symptoms for many years now although I do not vomit. The belching of bad smelling gas generally occurs the day after I have consumed certain foods, these include- some high protein foods such as red and white meat, eggs, some seafood, also if I have had a big food binge. To minimize the attacks I have cut these foods and food habits out of my diet. This problem still effects me approximately 1 to 2 times per year and when it does I will wake up and take 15 to 30ml of Laxative Emulsion (called Agarol made in Australia), this stops the belching straight away. This isn't a cure and it's not ideal to be taking a laxative, even if it is such a small dose, but it does help and enables you to get on with your day. I have been reading about this issue and it seems to be very common among all different types of people, with slightly different symptoms and triggers. It is more then likely a digestive disorder, but what it is exactly, I'm not sure. Like many of you I would like a complete cure from this problem because it's terrible. I am looking into my own symptoms with my GP as my last attack was quite recent. Good luck

What Are Sulfur Burps?
The smell of sulfur (sulphur) or rotten egg burps comes from hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gas originating from sulfur-containing proteins in certain foods (see below) after they are broken down in the stomach or small intestine by sulfur-reducing microbes. These microbes may be normal intestinal bacteria or pathogenic bacteria.
Sulfur Containing Foods
Removing sulfur containing foods from the diet may reduce the smell of sulfur burps:
Sulfur containing food preservatives, like guacamola, often used on dried fruits, salads in hotels, meat in fast-food restaurants or in pre-prepared canned foodsPoultryRed meatsEggsDairy products, especially milkVegetables: asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, garlic, mustard, onions, pack choi, parsley, sweet potatoes, Swiss chard, tomatoes, watercress, yamsLegumes: beans, peas, lentils, soy, carob, jicama, alfalfaFruits: avocado, bananas, watermelonGrains, nuts and seeds: corn, sunflower seeds, oats, cashews, walnuts, almonds, sesame seeds, coconut.Tea and coffeeWhey proteinsAmino acids: cysteine, methionineVitamins B1 (thiamine) and H (biotin)Certain medicines may contain sulfur (also check labels for amino acids cysteine or methionine that contain sulfur).Sulfur Reducing Microbes
Examples of sulfur reducing bacteria and some other microbes that can use sulfur compounds from the food and yield hydrogen sulfide as an end product:
Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium causing chronic gastritis, gastric or duodenal ulcer, upper abdominal bloating, heartburn and burping. H. pylori is diagnosed by urea breath test; treatment is by antibiotics.Giardia lamblia, a one-cell parasite, usually contracted by food or water poisoning, causing diarrhea, bloating, foul smelling burps or farts. For diagnosis and treatment read abouthuman intestinal parasites. Intestinal bacteria that are part of normal intestinal flora but can cause bloating, burping, flatulence or diarrhea when they overgrow; condition is called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) . SIBO may be also present in lactose intolerance or fructose malabsorption. In certain diseases like celiac disease or Crohn’s disease, foods may not be digested completely and can be therefore broken down by sulfur reducing bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide. How To Get Rid Of Sulfur Burps?Remove as much as possible sulfur containing foods from your diet. This may reduce sulfursmell of burps and gas in a day or two. After that, you will still need to find the cause of belchingor gas themselves. If you suspect you might have celiac disease, besides the low-sulfur diet, try a gluten-free diet (no wheat, barley and rye). If your symptoms disappear or lessen considerably within a week or two, this speaks for celiac disease. If you have history of peptic ulcer, stomach burning, gastric reflux and heartburn, visit a gastroenterologist and ask for a breath test for Helycobacter pylori. This bacterium is a common cause of sulfur burps. Treatment is with 7 or 10 day course of antibiotics. If you are bloated and have excessive foul smelling gas or loose stools with mucus, ask your doctor for a stool test for ova and parasites (O&P) since you may have infection with a parasite giardia. Treatment is with anti-parasitic drugs. If you suspect Crohn’s disease - symptoms include low grade temperature, nausea, fatigue, blood in the stool, diarrhea, bloating - visit gastroenterologist and ask for appropriate tests that may include colonoscopy. If all above tests are negative, ask for breath test for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) .Gastric emptying test may reveal slow stomach emptying (gastroparesis). Some people with gallstones reported that sulfur burps disappeared after gallbladder removal. Diagnosis of gallstones is with abdominal ultrasound or other gallbladder tests.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
To get rid of sulfur burps, sometimes you only need to remove some particular food(s) rich in sulfur, for example, Pina Colada, containing coconut cream. If you have sulfur burps but NOT sulfur gas (flatulence) the cause is probably in your stomach (H. pylori infection, gastroparesis). If you suffer from both sulfur burps and gas or only sulfur gas you may have small intestinal or gallbladder disorder.Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate), a popular antidiarrheal drug, binds hydrogen sulfide and removes it from the gastrointestinal tract thus reducing sulfur burps and gas. Pepto Bismol should NOT be used in children, and no longer then 2-3 weeks in adults. Pepto Bismol usually colors your tongue and stool black.

?Hi everyone i had a reply for all of your stories i can identify with all of you. this web site came to me by accident i was oh wow i get these and my 22yr old daughter.my sister.and my boy friend too. thats all we know I also have seen DR.s like a check up or some other DR. appointments each time i would try to get the courage to ask this discusting question and they look at you like you have 10 heads. so then im so embarassed about asking in the first place but i dont know what to do im just looking for answers. so i still dont know what this is. Its not my gallbladder i dont have one. I do have GERD and a Gastroparesis(a very slow stomach emptying my food to my small intestine part of my stomach is paralysed). so these very smelly burps come on without warning or where you are or people that your with. and all it takes is one burp and you know what your in for,(the hoooooole fricken day).so allready it sucks and they of course your not home when in the car no matter what the weather is every one open your windows these are way worse than a simple fart. i have tried every thing extra prilocex, mylanta.gum doesnt help penut butter i even tried swallowing listerine mouth wash (nope). carry tooth paste to use (i mean everything),and you know you smell bad (so people dont say i dont smell anything),thats a lie. and then when it happens in public i have tried to hold in the burps and that definatly does not work. IT COMES OUT YOUR NOSE! So now we need to cancel certain appointments and definitely cancel dates thats for sure no visiting any one AND then this one your stuck when your at work. SO WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH US? May be a Dr. will read our stories. Because your not gonna talk to friends or family. I'm so glad I came across this web site. THANK YOU for sharing i feel a little better to know that i wasnt the only GROSS! one. THANKS AGAIN GUYS gkmass

For the past 2yrs intermittently, 8 times, I have started burping and it tastes/smells like rotten eggs. Then, without fail, I'll get exact symptoms of food poisoning for days, sweating profusely, almost to weak to stand, fiercely vomiting, water BM's, lose around ten lbs., easily miss >/= 4 days of work. Actual symptoms last for usually 2 days then I'm extremely weak for three or more days. This has to stop! My GI doc says stay away from fatty foods and quit smoking. It doesn't seem to be food related I have a Hietal Hernia and had a spell of Gastroperesis 4 yrs. ago-thank God the Gastroperesis went away-wouldn't wish that on anyone! Is there anyone out there having the same problems>? I need some accurate advice from experience at this point! Nurse friend says to use some type of Aloe oil..... HELP NEEDEED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi guys hope everyone is getting better, I am not and could use some help!
I'm Mike, 58 and for the past 2 yrs., intermittently, have started burping with the smell/taste of rotten eggs 8 times. I burp for a little while then experience the exact symptoms as food poisoning : I sweat profusely, get almost too weak to stand, start to vomit fiercely, a lot of BM's all watery and continue to moan and lose energy. The symptoms last for usually 2 or 3 days, lose approximately 10lbs., I'm weak and dehydrated for at least a week and miss >/= 4 days of work each time.
It doesn't seem to be food related. My GI doc says to stop eating fatty foods and to quit smoking. I have a Hietial Hernia and had a short spell of Gastroperesis 5 yrs. ago-thank God the Gastroperesis is dormant, I wouldn't wish that on anyone!
I really need some help, I am now, today, just recovering from another episode Tuesday and am at approx. 75%. I really need some advice from the voice of experience! My nurse friend says to take some sort of Aloe oil from a health food store.
HELP PLEASE!
Mike

I have the same problem with rotten egg burps which start about 3 am and then around 5 or 6 am it is very watery bowl movements. this last all day until about 4 pm. I went to the Dr. and he said to cut my food into very small smash pieces even eat baby food. This works. If I go off the way of eating, have a sandwich or a large meal, it starts all over again. I am to eat several times a day.
The Dr. said pieces of food are not being expelled when I have a regular bowl movement and then it gets tainted because I am missing another type of bacteria that should be in my stomach to help process the food I eat. I take Acidophilus (over the counter medicine). Also I do not have my gull bladder.
