Defining Burping Or Belching
Burping or belching refers to the passing of gas through the mouth as a result of digestion or swallowed air. It is our body's natural way of expelling excess air trapped in the digestive tract. Excess air can enter our digestive tract when we eat or drink too fast, drink carbonated beverages or sip drinks through a straw. Chronic belching can also result due to gastritis or inflammation of the stomach lining. Belching or burping can create sounds which can be a source of embarrassment in social settings. It is considered normal to burp three to four times after a meal, which is normally due to swallowed air, although food breakdown in the stomach and intestines can also produce a fair amount of gas.

What Are Rotten Egg Burps aka Sulphur Burps
Burping refers to expulsion of air and certain gases through the mouth. Sulphur burps are burps that smell like rotten eggs or sulphur. The rotten egg burp is due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide gas (H2S), which is normally present in sulphur proteins. Sulphur-reducing microbes inhabit parts of the digestive tract where they release the gas during the breakdown of food. Certain bacteria cause bloating, heartburn and burping. Giardia lamblia is a single-celled parasite contracted from food or water that can cause bloating, diarrhea, and foul-smelling burps. There are other reasons for rotten egg burps or sulphur burps including certain foods, and medications.

Helicobacter As A Sulphur Burps Cause
Rotten egg burps or sulphur burps are often caused by Helicobacter pylori or H. pylori, a bacterium that causes chronic gastritis, duodenal or stomach ulcer, bloating, heartburn, and burping. The infection of the digestive tract is usually spread by poor hygiene, drinking unclean water, and oral-fecal transmissions. The most serious cause of sulphur burps is due to gastrointestinal infection that is caused by Helicobacter pylori. Like any other infection, treatment is a course of antibiotics. Other intestinal bacteria that cause rotten egg burps include Giardia lamblia, which is a single-celled bacterium. It is contracted by food or water poisoning. Drinking clean water and practicing good hygiene is a necessary step to avoid contracting bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori and Giardia lamblia.

Medications Which Contains Sulfur
You may be unaware that your prescription medicines sometimes contain sulphur and may be the cause of your sulphur burps or rotten egg burps. Some drugs can increase stomach acidity causing rapid breakdown of food and cause sulphur burps. Take a quick look at the label on your prescription medicine. An online search can also reveal the chemical composition of your prescription medication. Any term such as sulphur or sulpha indicates that it is a component of your medication, and maybe the reason for your rotten egg burps. Antibiotics contain certain chemicals called sulphonamides, which indicate the presence of sulphur in the chemical composition of the medicine. This can cause sulphur burps. Other sulphur medicines are certain diabetes medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, water pills, etc.

Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is one of the causes of sulphur burps. The condition can also cause abdominal bloating, burping, flatulence, and diarrhea. In our gastrointestinal tract, normal bacterial growth maintains a delicate balance and keeps the digestive process in harmony. However, if you suffer from some conditions such as Crohn's disease, celiac disease, fructose intolerance or even lactose intolerance, it can result in overgrowth of bacteria in the gut. Any of the above reasons that result in small intestinal bacterial overgrowth can cause sulphur burps. In Crohn's disease or celiac disease certain foods may not be broken down completely or digested completely, and the sulphur-reducing bacteria break down the food causing sulphur burps due to production of hydrogen sulphide gas.

Sulfur Contained Food (Guacamole, Eggs, Poultry, Dairy,...)
Certain protein-rich foods cause sulphur burps due to release of hydrogen sulphide gas. The gas is produced when food stays longer in the digestive tract, especially after a high-protein meal. A chemical reaction that occurs triggers the production and release of the foul-smelling gas, hydrogen sulphide. A high-protein meal can also induce bloating and discomfort due to indigestion. The sulphur burps will disappear on its own when the protein-rich meal is digested and the gas expelled. When you have a heavy meal, it takes longer to digest and the food moves slowly in the digestive tract, releasing hydrogen sulphide as it continues the process of digestion. Common foods that contain sulphur are eggs, poulty, dairy, guacamole, tea and coffee, most grains, nuts, seeds, whey protein, tea and coffee, and legumes. Vegetables contain sulphur, especially broccoli, cabbage, garlic, onions, parsley, swiss chard, etc.

Coffee And Tea Contain Sulfur
As we have seen earlier, many foods contain sulphur and maybe the reason behind the rotten egg burps you are experiencing. Certain beverages such as tea and coffee also contain sulphur and cause sulphur burps. Sulphur is a violent digestive tract irritant and can cause untold misery if you are suffering from colitis, Crohn's syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome or IBS, and gastritis. Tea and coffee contain some amounts of sulphur and can cause irritability of the digestive tract. Excessive intake of both, coffee and tea, are not advised for people suffering from the above ailments. You cannot avoid every food that contains sulphur because your body needs sulphur to form amino acids and other enzymes.

Eat A Lot Of Fresh Fruit (High-Fiber Diet)
Burping is the body's natural mechanism to get rid of excessive gas or air that is in the digestive tract. Sulphur burps or rotten egg burps are caused by several factors. Getting rid of the gas is important to relieve symptoms of bloating and gastritis. Eat a high-fiber diet, for example, a diet rich in fresh fruit. Fruit juices are not ideal in this situation because your body must get a lot of fiber to push food through the intestines. Any food that has stayed too long in the intestines must be digested and propelled along the small intestines. If you eat a considerable amount of fresh fruit, the fiber-rich fruit will play an important role in digestion and expulsion of air or gas in the intestines.

Avoid Junk Food And Carbonated Drinks
If you are suffering from sulphur burps or rotten egg burps, you must avoid certain foods and drinks. Avoid junk food or food that is heavily processed. Canned food and ready-to-eat foods also contain significant amounts of sulphur and must be avoided to get rid of smelly burps. Carbonated drinks such as cola contain too much sugar that can cause buildup of gas or air in the stomach or intestines. Junk food and processed food include ice cream, desserts, candies and other sweet foods. Stay clear of foods and drinks that are laden with sugar or other sweetening agents as this will only increase your sulphur burps.

Consult Doctor About Possible Disease
Rotten egg burps or sulphur burps can be caused due to several reasons including medicines, Helicobacter, food, etc. Sometimes home remedies may not relieve your symptoms and you may have to seek medical attention. It is better to consult with your physician before your symptoms worsen. Tips to avoid sulphur burps include avoiding high-protein foods, canned and processed foods, carbonated drinks, and beverages. Drinking plenty of water and consuming high-fiber fruits are recommended as well. If none of these tips work, consult your doctor and get some prescription medication to help relieve your symptoms. An antibiotic regimen may be warranted if you are suffering from an infection. Diseases such as Crohn's disease must get medical attention immediately.
