Thank you. I have no support from my family in NJ. They are oblivious to the procedure and to me.
Should I leave this house of doom and go to my condo in Calif. and look for a surgeon out there.
How long did it take before you were able to drive?
I'm truly sorry to hear of your trauma.

I had a T 10 laminectomy with a pelvic fusion April 2012. 11 hours or surgery destroyed bowel function to the point I have to use different things to make me go. Since I've had the surgery my right leg is 1/2 inch shorter and it hurts to walk. I'm thankful I can walk but now I walk with a limp that I never had before the surgery. The pain in my lower back always feel like someone is sitting on me all the time. I can't sit, walk or stand longer than 30 to 45 minutes at a time. I want to know how long does this pain last and what can I do to get relief other than drugs, heat and ice?

You DO NEED SUPPORT before and after the surgery. The pain is no joke and the recovery time is very long depending on the surgery. The surgeon can provide you with what you need to do. I would go or fine someone to help me... If that is California then go before.

I am really sadden by your post, all I can say is rethink the boyfriend and shame on your daughter. I know I'm being harsh, but I'm sick of how selfish people are, only caring about themselves. Just wait until something happens to them and they need help, but it shouldn't have to take that for them to care and help you. Very sad. I pray you are doing better now.

I am a paramedic/firefighter, 20 years on the job. I recently underwent 5 back surgeries, 2 discectomies that didnt work and had to be fused, all individual surgeries, and one infection that had to be scraped out. I am now 6 months post op from my last fusion, and I am getting stronger, walk 2.25 miles every day. I still have a numb left foot and pretty intense Sacroiliac pain. As painful as it is too exercise, I am noticing improvements. My surgeon said the more I push my left foot, the more likely I will regain full sensation and strength. So far its been responding. I hope to get back to running. Surgeon said, absolutely. He said he has had several runners get back, but suggests shorter strides to reduce the impact. I also plan on getting back on the job. I am 44 y/o

A year is generally the whole healing time. Be careful in all that you do, no benidng, reaching, twisting, lifting over 10 lbs were my instructions. Plus walk and keep flexible - do the PT exerccies and have patience. It is frustrating, and remember Rome wasn't buiilded in a day. DOn't for to ask for help. THe important thing to remember is to take care of yourself so that you will heal properly and feel good for many years to come.

I suffered from sciatica (sp?) prior to my first fusion, and my Doc prescribed Gabapentin. I do not have any problems with it now, or any side effects from the medication. I am scheduled for my second fusion in a few months... The sciatica was painful, and I was glad to find something to take care of it. Good luck.

Hi Everyone -
I'm happy to find this forum! I have had three back surgeries in the last four years. My last surgery was a posterior + anterior fusion at L5-S1 a year ago. Prior to that I had a microdiscectomy and later a fusion at L3-L4. I am still struggling with pain and numbness in my left leg, though my strength is pretty good and I walk several miles per day. I sleep poorly and am uncomfortable sitting or standing for any length of time. I seem to do best when I am moving, but obviously can't do that all day long.
I recently saw my Back Dr for my one year check up, and shared how I am feeling. My fear is that my unfused L4-L5 is failing, but he said it looks fine. My visit was super quick and he basically congratulated me for getting to the one year post surgery point.
I am trying to stay positive and have a good attitude most days, but am so so tired of being in pain. I am a Jr High Principal and am even considering early retirement because I am just so wiped out by the end of the day and end of the week. I don't want another surgery, I'm just not sure what to do next!
Any suggestions or support would be much appreciated. I am not sure whether to go to my Primary Care Dr, get another opinion, or just continue plugging along and hoping to get better.

Have the Dr change the meds. Ok can't take hydrocodone either but I can Percocet. No you should not be doing any cleaning. Bending, twisting, lifting is going to be a slow process. Your Pt should be able to help you know time frames. I've seen too many people mess up the surgery by jumping back i to regular activities but it's so important to be patient. I try to stay away from pain meds when at all possible.
