I had my Septoplasty/Turbinate Reduction on 12/29/10 and had the splints removed today. I have to say the 1 week of uncomfortable side effects from the surgery was totally worth it. Although I had to take Xanax a few times when the congestion was so bad I was panicking about choking in my sleep. I sat mostly upright in the recliner until the splints came out simply because it made me less congested. I also too Tylenol PM to help me sleep. Only took pain meds for the first few days due to extreme sinus pressure. I didn't get sick afyer surgery, the nurse said they gave me a shot if anti-nausea meds so I guess that's why. Some things that I wish I would have been told to keep on hand: Several boxes of aloe tissues, Blistex lip balm, humidifier (that really helped), a few bags of frozen peas (they work better in baggies than ice), if you wear glasses you'll need some tape to keep them up off the bridge of your nose for the first few days. Overall the congestion was the worst, almost unbearable at times but for someone like myself who had suffered for decades with headaches not knowing what was causing them this is a blessing. In the past year I had 2-3 headaches per week and in the last few months prior to the surgery the headaches were daily (I would wake up with them and went through bottle after bottle of aspirin and various migraine meds that made me so lethargic). Also my snoring had gotten so loud I would wake myself up so my sleep was constantly interrupted. I can already tell my quality of life is going to be SO improved just from how I feel right now and I'm still pretty swollen! The benefits FAR outweigh the discomfort for 1 week:-)

I also had my septoplasty on 12/29

When I woke up I was extremely nauseous, even after the nurses kept putting meds in my IV. They also put pain medicine in my IV but wanted me to orally take vicodin before I left. The nausea wouldn't go away; they said it was the blood I had swallowed during the surgery and probably wouldn't feel better until I puked it, so instead they called in a perscription for the vicodin. They gave me water to drink, and I vomited blood. They said it was a lot so it was probably all of it. I felt okay for a little while so I changed back into my clothes but then I started feeling really nauseous again so they had me lay down again and drink ginger ale. The nausea wouldn't go away so after 2 hours in the recovery room they decided to send me home like that. When I got home I puked more blood, then went straight to sleep. 2 hours later when my perscription was ready my sister woke me up to take the vicodin. The nurse had told me to eat something light before, so I had a slice of sandwich bread and then took 2 vicodin. As soon as I layed back down, I threw up what I'd just eaten. I was still very tired so I went to sleep. After that all I had was water, but even when I drank just water, I'd vomit within 5 minutes. I stopped drinking water but I'd wake up from my sleep because my body wanted to vomit, but I'd just sit there heaving because there was literally nothing in my stomach. I had taken vicodin twice (1 pill each time) that day, but really had no relief since I puked them straight back out. I definitely felt the pressure on my nose every time I had to vomit, and that caused my nose to bleed a lot too. My doctor called me at 10 PM that night and I told him how sick I was, so he said to stop the vicodin and take regular tylenol.

The second day when I woke up I still felt nauseous and I had a terrible headache. I took 2 extra strength tylenol (which I've been taking every 4 hrs since then) and perscription anti-nausea medicine. I ate some cereal and the nausea went away. I didn't vomit at all after the first day. The second day I felt fine, the pain in my nose was dull. I'd get dizzy if I walked around too much so I just propped myself on the couch most of the day. The third day the swelling on the outside of my nose started to go away. The inside of my nose itched, especially the stitches. Once the swelling was gone, it really hurt to talk and smile because it pulled on my splints. The rest of the week was pretty much the same, felt fine as long as I was on my butt, but dizzy if I did too much.

A week later I had my splints taken out and he said everything looked fine. I told him I had horrible headaches and he said it would take "a while" for them to go away, but eventually they would. When I walked out of there my nose was bleeding a little from where the stitches were but as soon as it stopped I could BREATHE! It was great, I was so excited. I've always had to breathe through my mouth so I had to constantly keep telling myself to breathe through my nose.

The day after my splint removal I woke up with an awful sinus headache and the worst congestion you could possibly imagine. Impossible to breathe through my nose. I was disappointed, I thought I'd be able to keep breathing as clearly as the day before.. but apparently the congestion lasts for a while. A few days later I had to go back to work. I work with food and obviously can't be wiping my runny nose all day so I started taking mucinex. It's helped stop the runny nose, but I still feel congested. It's been almost 3 weeks now and the congestion hasn't changed much, I still take cold medicine all day. Sometimes I can breathe really well through my nose and other times I have to breathe through my mouth. Sometimes I still get really dizzy and when I look down for too long my nose hurts a lot. My body didn't respond too well to the anesthesia- I still feel really tired and fatigued all the time.

If you're thinking about the surgery, take into consideration that recovery is much much longer than the one week the doctor tells you. I had to go back to work because I need to pay my bills but I always feel like c**p and all I want is to be in bed with my vaporizer next to me.

I had Septoplasty done because 1 nostril I could breath out of and the other nostril would be 3/4 plugged and it would alternate back and fourth & when they were alternating I could breath out of both nostril's for a little while.

I had Septoplasty done Jan 18, got my splint's taken out on Jan 25. It's almost one week that i've had my splint's taken out and yet I haven't found a change in my nose being able to breath outta both nostril's. My nose is still full of c**p, somenight's I can't even sleep because I have alot of stuff up in my nostril's still . I still find the surgery hasn't helped me out yet, 3/4 of the time I can still only breath out of one nostril and the other nostil is 3/4 plugged off.

Did this happen to anyone eles? Am I doing something wrong?
