When I take pain medications, and after about six hours, I get the most severe pain in my upper back and across my upper abdomen. This usually lasts for an hour or two. The last time was VERY severe - I would describe it as severe cramping and "hardness'. Can you give me any help with this, or give me an undersanding as to what is going on. I have a history of back surgery and degeneration of the spine.

You may have an allergy to pain meds, or quite simply your body "doesn't like" them. If this occurs, it sounds like you're better off not taking them.

You can go to the doctor who prescribed the medication, if they were prescribed, and inquire about your symptoms. You can still ask your doctor if they weren't prescribed and see why you're having such a bad reaction.

Hello, I too have exepirenced this as well, I usually get the effect of the pain in my upper abdomen area, and sometime radiates to my lower back. The med I am talking about is Oxycodone 20mg ER. The pain is from the kidneys processing the medication, and the upper abdomen pain is the liver processing. The narcotic you are on may be too much, or try taking it with food, this seemed to help me. The pain for myself lasts about 20 min to an hour and subsidizes. Afterwards I feel great b/c the med is doing it's job by then. Talk to your doctor though about having this pain, maybe your mgs need a reduction and a different med prescribed that has the same properties but less potent. Josh
