What can you tell me about the side effects of the mri contrast dye that is routinely administered to patients undergoing an mri scan? I have been having persistent pain in my lower back and the doctor wants to do an mri to make sure that there is no tumor present. I will likely be given the mri contrast dye as well. What should I know?

The contrast dyes used for MRI scanning can have some unpleasant side effects, but none of them are long term or serious. Think hives, diarrhea, headache and some temporary discoloration of the skin. MRI contrast dyers are only used in about 20 percent of all MRI scans, but in case of a suspected tumor the dyes make the MRI scan much more effective.

Kate, My brother is a veteran and had an MRI w/contrast at a VA facility in Michigan on Friday. He complained to the tech's during and after the procedure that he was experiencing some kind of "misting" going on while the MRI was running. While the tech's were dubious during the procedure, an exam of his sheets showed that they were wet. Since Friday his face, neck and ears are burning - redness, rawness, blistering, scabs and he said that his ears are like potato chips. He is in a lot of pain and discomfort. Thinking back this a.m. he said that this rashing started right after the MRI and is like a radiation/chemical burn. He described is facial skin as "falling off." Is there a possibility that something leaked from the equipment/contrast that could have burned him like this. If so, what?

They used contrast in a spinal cat scan. On the way home I lost my appetite. I went to bed and experienced extreme lower back pain. Then I had crazy dreams. I began to throw up. I've never been sicker in my life. I finally got a couple of hours of sleep. Now besides some dizziness I'm OK. Called the exray specialist and was told there are no side effects with the contrast. Why did my symptoms begin 30 minutes after the procedure and end 10 hours later?

You have been lied to by the person that told you there were no side effects. The dye contains a heavy metal that MOST people have no effect from. The list of symptoms however is long and varies from headache, diarrhea, light sensitivity, anxiety, vomiting, to a rare skin disorder affecting only 25 people a year.

The person lied. I have been googling this contrast and will never get it again. It is dangerous and since your reaction was so severe you need to put that in your file do you don’t get that contrast. I’m so glad you got mostly better as I feel sick since mine yesterday. No warnings were ever given to me by anyone. You give me some hope.
