My husband has been having horrible pain in his spleen area and a CT showed slight enlargement of the spleen. He also has had blood in his stool and vomits red blood periodically. His blood cell count for red blood cells is very low and the doctor said that because he has Hep C, the spleen may actually just be holding onto the red blood cells making it appear low. However the pain is so bad and debilitating, my husband wants his spleen removed. He took pegulated rebitrol interferon for Hep C 3 years ago and he has been very thin ever since and now has all these other issues with the spleen. I read somewhere that some medications can cause spleen enlargement, is Peg. Rebitrol Interferon one of them? If so, is there anything that can be done for my husband besides speen removal? If not what advice would you give someone who must undergo this surgery?
Thanks so much
