I have had MRI's (2, last being 9/09), multitudinous lumbar/hip x-rays. Technical readers (doctors) found weaknesses in L4-L5, flue leakage from these compressed discs, a hermangioma at L2 (supposedly NOT serious), an uncovered spinal bifida defect at S1 (very clear to see), and a curved and fully twisted case of "mild" scoliosis, a few bony lesions throughout the area, bursitis, a labral antosuperior tear, fluid on the hip, etc.
I went to a osteo specialist today who made me take all new x-rays, sat me down, tossed the other MRI studies I had, and told my back and hip appeared completely "normal to him".
Talk about feel invalidated! I have been suffering, limping, crying, spending less "walk: time witj oour doctr.
The he tells me that I should be on narcotics (first vicodin, then changed to percocet to reduce the large amount of daily tylenol ingestion. Percocets I'm taking are 10/350 (1 to 2 at a time 1 to 3 times a day, but I try not to do this). He put the fear of GOD into me telling me, "You need to get off of this and you will have to have help. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO THIS WITHOUT HELP."
Okay, inside I'm thinking....I don't like you. First you invalidate the misery I've been going through and then you beat around the bust that I'm going to need a detox program. Then you say, HOWEVER, I am referriing you to pain management, and putting you on an acute round of prednisone, celebrex and neurontin.
I cried for two hours. I called my family doctor whom this id**t above said, "Well these family doctors patch you up with narcotics when your are in pain because it's a little bag of tricks they keep up their sleeves and it's irresponsible." (as if his disapproving shaking of the nead wasn't enough! I told my doctor what happened. She said that I was not to see this person again, that I cannot take the prednisone and celebrex at the same time (she knows how my stomach gets upset), and she wanted to see the neurotin script. When she saw it today, she said it is too much in a day, according to the directions, so let's just start with one at a nightime.
By the way, this meeting with the OIP lasted for two hours, during which time I saw another patient crying her eyes out, coming out saying, I was told there was nothing they could do for her pain (older woman with osteoporosis and various fractures throughout her spine! Come on, that was an appropriate pain med case and every knows it!!!)
Anyhow, there has GOT to be a good doctor who can deal with what I believe is chronic and severe sciatica. I also have rheumatoid arthritis and that and the leg/hip wake me up are unbearable!! I'm only 43 and this is killing my quality of life. I'm going to give the pain management a try for sure, but even my doctor agreed that going off of opiates right now before any of the irritating pain elements are at least reduced, is the WRONG move.
Are there any specialists out there who will look at my DVD of MRI scans and give me there opinion? I really disgusted right now... :-(

I really hate that you had such an awful experience and it is unfortunate. I'm sorry and I hope that you're doing well now. Have you looked into talking to other doctors about it? I think at this point that would be a really good idea. What do you think?

Every big city has many teaching hospitals. Usually they have a chronic pain unit. Ask your dr. to referr you to a hospital that has a good chronic pain unit. In Toronto, St. Mike's, Sunnybrook have been ones where the drs. are great. I really hope you find a caring dr. I am sure there are more units then that.
