sorry to not have answered this post before now, but the surgery left me stuck here in bed since then, and for the forseeable future. one week after the surgery, as i was sitting down in the bathroom, i suddenly felt and heard this terrible crunching and grinding sounds mid back, and incredible pain. i couldnt get either the surgeon or my GP to tell me what happened, and why it happened after the operation. i finally went to the ER, and made myGP take x rays, ans though it was months after it happened, it showed that a vertabra was shattered. to add to this, long after the hemmemorid surgical site was healed, it hurts worse than before to sit....somehoe the surgery made the problem with my tailbone much worse. so now, there is no way i can sit up for more than an hour and that only with the help of oxycontin and flexeril. the damn surgeryy did nothing it was supposed to do, i got a new exterior hemeroide that first week, and somehow it all caused increased pain in my tailbone and broke my back. the moral of this: WHATEVER YOU DO, **DO NOT GET HEMMORIDE SURGERY!!! IT WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE!!!***

I had hemorrhoid surgery several years ago. Unfortunately I had to have a 2nd surgery about 5 weeks ago. I was very apprehensive about the 2nd surgery as I recalled how painful the recovery was the first time around. To my surprise the 2nd time around was much easier. I believe my approach following the 2nd surgery made all the difference. After the 1st surgery I took stool softeners and fiber capsules along with painkillers (hydrocodone). The first 3-4 days were fine but I hadn't had a bowel movement . Once I did and for the following week it was hell as the pain medication constitpated me and every time after was like passing glass shards.
I did some things differently this last time and it made all the difference. First of all DRINK AT LEAST 2 QUARTS OF WATER DAILY for the first week after surgery. Secondly, I did NOT TAKE ANY PAIN MEDICATION OTHER THAN IBUPROFEN. I was tempted to take vicadin but did not and thus avoided constipation. I also ATE VERY LITTLE the first couple days and when I did I ONLY SOFT HIGH FIBER FOODS. I would eat a couple prunes, a few pieces of pineapple or an orange or some vegetables like broccoli or brussel sprouts. I would also take 1 or 2 STOOL SOFTENERS about 3 - 4 times a day along with Metamucil at night.
As a result while I certainly experienced some discomfort it was tolerable and I avoided any extreme pain.
My experience the 2nd time around was much more tolerable.
Good luck!

Thanks so much for this advice. I'm 10 days out and have felt that this was a bad decision. I'm constantly having this heavy pressure in my rectum which I thought was a bm. I do have bm leakage now. But never before. I am very swollen and feared that the abrasive bm have caused more swelling. I'm taking benefiber and stool softener. Is this all you recommend? How about epsom salts in bathwater?
