Hello all! I thought I've just give experience as it seems that it wasn't as bad as everyone elses here!
I'm 32 and from the UK so it was a fairly different experience to most here. I've has tonsilitis several times and have those nasty tonsil stones so I decided to have them lopped out. The procedure I had was via diathermy which (according to Wiki) burns the tonsils out by using electricity. I had them out last Wed (23rd May) and I was in and out of hospital within 6 hours which was pretty good going i thought (espceially for the NHS!) It was my first operation and I have never broken anything so I was extremely anxious about pain levels as I haven't really experience any moderate or above pain yet! Below is my day to day progress with my pain level indictors.
DAy 1 - Arrived at the hopsital around noon and was first on the list so i had the procedure at around 1:30pm. I woke up around 3:15pm and promptly burst into tears...I'm not sure why as I wasn't in any pain! Before I was discharged i had to drink a couple of glasses of water (the coolness of it was super soothing) and ate a chicken mayo sandwich. Here in the UK they encourage you to get back to your normal diet asap which I thought was going to be a struggle but I ate the sandwich with little issues although I did eat it super slowly. I was discharged with paracetamol, ibuprofen and antibiotics and my parents came to pick me up around 6pm. When I got to my parents house (my mummy gladly looked after me for a week!) I had some grilled salmon and some potatoes which I demolished - slowly! I had to sleep propped up on the sofa that night though as everytime I lay down I felt like I was choking on something - swollen uvula maybe? Pain level for day - 2
DAy 2 - Woke up still feeling ok but this was to be expected. Had some toast for breakfast which was nice. I've found iced water super soothing so my mum popped to the shops to get me some ice lollies which made me feel like I was 5yrs old again - it was great! I haven't been taking my pain meds much today as I haven't felt the need to do do! At the moment it just feels like I have a slight sore throat. Had to sleep on the sofa again. Pain level for day - 2
Day 3 - I've started to take my pain medication every 4 hours now as I start to feel my throat getting a litte more sore today but it's no where as near as what I expected it to be. I've also not felt hungry most of the day so I have only been nimbling bits here and there today. I've noticed that I have quite a big blister just inside my lip, I presume this was as a result of the clamp during surgery. Slept on sofa again that night. Pain level for day - 3
Day 4 - I woke today with ear pain. It wasn't sharp pain but rather dull and rather annoyingly it didn't subside even when i took my meds. One of my friends popped around to see me today which took my mind off the pain and she also bought me a huge tub of ice-cream! I'd read here that it's best not to have any dairy as it can cause a mucus build up so I was reluctant to try it straight away but when i did it was lovely and soothing and although there was a bit of a mucusy build up it was gone by dinner. I managed to sleep in my bed last night (but with 5 pillows to prop me up) whoop! Pain level for day - 3
Day 5 - Woke up again with ear pain. I have been sleeping ok throughout this experience. I would wake up around dawn and have some water then go back to bed. I've realised today that my ear pain is worse than my throat pain today so I ask my mum to get me some co-codamol which seems to take the edge off the ear pain today. Today I start to clock watch to see when I can take my next set of tablets. eeek! Pain level for day 4
Day 6 - Woke up with a different feeling in my throat this morning. I don't know how to describe it really but I figured this was a sign that my scabs were coming off. The scabs are still there but they look at lot more thinner - not sure if thats a good thing. My ear pain is quite bad again today. :-( I ventured out of the house for the first time as well today. It was nice to have stroll with my mum in the sunshine. Pain level for day 4
Day 7 - I woke up with little pain in my throat this morning. MY ear pain is still bad though but I managed to get out again today. I had lunch out with my mum which was lovely although I could only manage a few bitefuls of jacket potato. On the way home though I felt very nauseous....I'm not sure if it was a result of being hot though. I also tried some diet coke with my lunch........oooouuuuuchhh! Pain level for day 3
Day 8 - I woke up this morning knowing that the worst was over. But more importantly I was going home today - yippee! As grateful as I am that my parents looked after me this past week I was soo happy to be going back to my flat and my own space!!! My throat feels a little sore but my ear pain is still there but I can go longer now before I have to take any pain killers. Pain level for day - 3
DAy 9 - I had a lovely sleep back in my own bed and although my throat/ear are still alittle sore I haven't felt the need to take any painkillers at all today (it's now 4:20pm) - whoop whoop! ! My voice is still sounding a little weird, I still have a huge load of scabs on my throat and my uvula is still gigantic but I feel it's only a matter of days until I can eat normally. I also weighed myself this morning and I have lost 9lbs (~4kg). Pain so far today - 2
Overall my experience has been very undramatic! Now I'm not sure why my experience was OK compared to some others.
I eagerly await the day I can do a full yawn!
For me...this was TOTALLY worth it!
