After having suffered with tonsilitis throughout my teenage years it came back with a vengence in my 30's! I am now 38, and was admitted to hospital 2 months ago with acute tonsilitis. I was in immense pain, and had a temp of 40 degress when I went in. I was unable to swallow my own saliva, and had to have a canula put in so that I could finally get a drip and some pain relief. The doctor put me on the waiting list for a tonsilectomy and the appointment has finally come around for this Sat. I am so scared, not of the op, but of the recovery. That said I have read some positive stories on here, and am feeling less anxious (ok, maybe I am still very anxious!) I too am going to blog my day by day recovery. But does anyone who has had this done in their 30's want to add some comments here please, I guess the more positive the better. I am based in the UK.

Thanks, Mandy :)

Hi. I am on day 12 of recovery. The pain during the recovery is like having a bad case of tonsillitis. Really sore throat (without the fever and all that good stuff). Yes it was painful. After all, it is surgery. The best thing to do is to KEEP UP WITH YOUR MEDICATION. For god's sake, don't miss a dose. That's very important. I had to end up calling in for an extra bottle of painkiller because they didn't give me enough. They shouldn't deny you at least one more bottle. I ended up not even finishing the last one. I started taking Motrin on day 6 and slowed down my medication day by day. It's a great way to ween yourself off that stuff. I was sick of being stoned off it. Granted it is kind of fun haha. Also, my taste buds have been messed up things taste gross or different but i heard this is normal and should go away in a few months. Good luck to you. It wasn't as bad as I had expected. Drink tons of water and get some rest.

Oh yeah! I bought a soft ice pack from the pharmacy and it became my best friend. I tied it around my neck with a scarf. It provided quite a bit of relief for me :)

Thank you for your reply, yes I am going to buy an ice pack as I have read that this is a big help. I wish I didnt have to go through this at all, but I know that I cannot go on having tonslilitis! I am hoping and preying I can tolerate the pain with the meds. Hope you are nearly pain free!
