Hi, thank you for writing this, I consider myself a healthy 52 yr old, but was lacking energy so I started taking a multivitamin 2 weeks ago and by day 3 I had what I would call severe depression, it took me another 2 days, when I found this article, to realize that it was the multivitamin, and have since stopped taking them. I seriously thought I was losing it, but since stopping the multivitamin I feel a lot better. Thanks again

Vitamins can make people moody some of them well it's really the fillers in the vitamins that can make people moody such as soybean oil or soy or vitamin e can be in soy form. Watch for the fillers in vitamins any vitamin try to buy vitamins with minimal fillers and avoid soy and soybean oil

Look into articles about histamine imbalances....not saying this is your problem, but it could be. Histamine is a neurotransmitter and when out of balance, causes other imbalances. If you are high histamine, you should avoid Folates and B12...other things if you are low histamine. I recommend articles by Dr Joan Mathews Larson, Dr Wm (Bill) Walsh or Carl Pfieffer. There are other great articles too. Just Google "how to tell if you're high or low histamine". You may find your answers there.

Many people are having this kind of problems but they are not incurable. Contact any good doctor that can give proper treatments.

Lads, so agree! Hadn't taken multivits or omega 3 for weeks until I came across them in my bag.. Took them yesterday, gave one of each to ny family and now my brother is depressed and I'm not feeling too great either. I'm chucking them. Apples and healthy foods over these tablets from now on. Goes against so much research but this is my own test and I'm done

I am so glad I found this chain! I googled whether or not vitamins can cause depression. In mid-September 2015 I started taking Alive Women's 50+ multivitamin. I do believe it resulted in increased energy, but in hindsight, that appears to be when I started feeling "off" - I no longer enjoyed my usual foods/beverages or things I use to enjoy doing. Life was getting really boring and unenjoyable. I'm guessing it was just about when I finished the bottle of 50 capsules, that the deepest, most god awful depression hit. I do believe it built up gradually and then hit hard. This was not just feeling blue or out of sorts. It was unbearable. Every day I woke up and said, "I can't go through another day of this." But I went to a naturopath (for the first time) and hung in there, as after a week or two, the worst of it subsided - I'm guessing because I was no longer taking the multivitamin. The naturopath feels folic acid (synthetic folate - B9) was the problem, something my body might not be able to handle in excess or continued use. Waiting for some test results to confirm. She currently has me on natural vitamins and supplements. I still don't enjoy ANYTHING, but I am not as bad as I was. I also wake up frequently during the night and early morning to urinate. My online research indicates this may be a symptom of taking some vitamins in excess. So, I plan to quit taking all these vitamins and supplements and start eating healthier. From what I've read online, some people's bodies just don't react well to certain vitamins or ingredients in them. I will provide an update once I get the test results and once I've been off the vitamins for a while. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

Recently turned Vegan, felt absolutely amazing for first month, then i figured i probably should be supplementing more with vitamins, so started taking a B complex. I strangley fell into bad depression but didnt link it to the vitamins at first...i stopped the vitamins for a week....then felt normal again? ..one day i took the vitamins one morning and that night the depression was back! Wham. No doubt in my mind they were the cause. I thought i was loosing it! So glad others have had this issue. Good thread

I'm sorry you thought that was funny. I've thought for some time that some vitamins made my depression worse.

I thought it was just me! Whenever I take multivitamins, they ALWAYS make me feel worse. I've tried several brands and all the same thing--I get depressed, anxious, moody and life feels hopeless. It's quite scary. Oh, and I go up a few pounds in weight which makes everything worse! Recently I started taking hair, skin and nail vitamins thinking they would be less intense than the regular multivitamin. Same thing! And I see no difference in my hair/skin/nails than before. I think the vitamins are overkill somehow and I don't process them as they should be processed. Some people are much more sensitive to them I guess. But I think we should trust how we feel--if something's making you feel that awful, it's not right for you no matter how many doctors advocate for it. I'll just stick to juicing and a healthy diet from now on.

I can relate to those that experience moodiness, fatigue and depression when taking vitamins.  I've noticed that every time I take a multi-vitamin I experience this same thing.  I have pretty much zero to worry, stress or be sad about; yet when I start back on my multi-vitamins I feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders.  Until I can pinpoint "which" vitamin is causing this (based on some research I suspect it's in the B family), I won't be taking them anymore. Everyone is different....you have to find what works for your body/mind/spirit.  I'll just stick to a clean diet, drink plenty of (alkaline) water and continue to get a good night's sleep. Cheers!  :)
