I have large amounts of ketones in my urine, what are the possible causes

Ketones are broken down fat cells. When your body cannot use carbohydrates, which is the body's preferred source of energy, it begins to break down fat, stored in your body.

When the body is breaking down fat instead of carbohydrates, it could mean a few things.

1. Metabolic disorders like diabetes, renal glycosuria, or glycogen storage disease
2. Dietary conditions such as starvation, fasting, high protein, or low carbohydrate diets, prolonged vomiting, and anorexia
3. Hyperthyroidism, fever, pregnancy or lactation
4. Acute illness or severe stress

Your doctor will probably run additional tests to figure out the cause.
