I have ben on the 50 mg fentanyl patch for 6 months. Started wondering how long i will be on pain meds! Had no idea wha would happen wehn i took it off. 4 hours later, went through HORRIBLE withdrawls! Felt like i was going to die. Started reading about them and got really scared. Could not stop crying. Called my doc. She prescribed Xanax and clonodine. Said it would take 7 days. Could not sleep. took lunesta and xanax to sleep. Have lost 10 lbs in a week . Can't eat. The first three days were the worst. I was curled up in the fetal position crying. I am a 36 yr old working mother. Could NOT have done this with out the support of my husband. Today is the 7th day. I have someone here cleaning my house because i still feel so lethargic. I am starting to feel better, although the pain is back. Talked to my pharmacist. He said i was making the right decision. I cannot tell you how badly i wanted to slap another one of those stupid patches on just to make this go away. NEVER AGAIN!! It just takes time and alot of pain. You have to be strong. am still feeling anxious and my body hurts and if i eat..it comes right back out one way or another. Jenny Craig for drug withdrawl. Please talk to your doc before you quit. You need help geting off. I went into see her crying and she said i am just going to have to get through it.T he worst thing ever. Reading these blogs help knowing other people go through the same thing. I had no idea that was going to happen. Please get help from your doctor. I thin i need antidepressants now to get my mental state straight. This has been a NIGHTMARE!

How long does it all last? I Stopped cold turkey after being on fenanyl 100mcg every two days and up to 8 percocets 7.5/325 per day. I was on this dosage for over a year. However I was smart and started to wean myself a bit over the past 3 months. See my ex-girlfriend was highly addicted and taking over 20 percocets a day, so I was supplying her and weaning myself down. I stopped on May 17th cold! Went until the 23rd and started taking the percocets, I had to just to work. After that I made two 100mcg patches last until June 9th. After that no more at all!!.. Today is June 17th and for the past two days, I am just starting to feel quasi-normal. Still cant sleep, legs are starting to feel about 50% normal (still jumpy but not cramping). No more diarreha (thank you Immodium). still have headaches (tylenol helps some, I think that there are some addictive propertied to the tylenol in percocet). I have no idea how long I'll have to feel this way??? Walking helps, and as crazy as it sounds, so does masturbation!! Helps Alot so I've been masturbating about 4 times a day. I guess it helps your body produce endorphins.

After reading all of these postings, I really think in spite of the fact I have had awful chronic pain for so many years that nothing could touch, till fentanyl patches, I now wonder if I'd rather suffer the pain.

I am on 50 mg. fentanyl patch for three years. It's the first time I've been without pain. I have degenerative disks, multiple levels, spinal stenoisis, osteoarthritis, and the list goes on.

I keep my patches under lock and key as I have someone clean my house and sometimes she brings someone new with her and I don't trust new people that I don't know roaming around the house. Anyway, I am supposed to change patch every 72 hours and I sometimes I forget a day or two later. Like today, I went and looked at the date I wrote on box and I am two days late.

Could this be causing me to chill and sweat on an off? I live in a hot and humid part of the country and I am either too cold in the a/c or too hot without it this summer. I am wondering since I've battle the chills and sweats for about two months if it is the fentanyl patches or TOO MUCH armour thyroid, I am on two pills a day.

This has been a rotten summer to say the least. I need some advice desperately and sadly, doctors do NOT care. They just write scripts and send you on your way.

Please help me and give me some advice on what these weird symptms are? I'm sweating now, so will crank up AC and start chilling.

Thanks, from No Life.

For all of you out there thinking about quitting Fentanyl, all I have to say is PLEASE don't do it on you own. I watched 2 people very close to me go through the withdrawals; one was a girlfriend who literally locked herself in her house for a week and screamed, cried, and thrashed around like crazy. The other was my mother who couldn't get her medicine when it was time to use it again and was forced into quitting. It was a sight I'll never forget!! I myself use Fentanyl for a chronic pain condition and I hate it!! I want to get off it so bad but even tapering down to the lowest dose, it is almost impossible to quit. If I could do it over again, I NEVER would have started using Fentanyl because although it helps my pain, even a few hours of not having it is excruciating!

Good luck to all of you out there who want and/or trying to quit and God Bless you in your success!!!

Some clown on this blog suggested "trimming" a sandoz brand patch as a method of tapering off. This is nonsense. If you cut this patch you risk immediate dosage of all the medicine, possibly fatal. You can trim, or cut the Mylan brand to smaller doses for taper purposes, NOT the sandoz.

My best friend is going through a slow detox from Duragesic. She is now on the 25mg patches. I am trying to learn as much as I can about the symptoms as I can so I can have a better understanding what she is going through. This will help me act/react to situations in a way as to not have her regess emotionally which leads to a physical regression. She has good days and bad days. On the bad days she would rather not be around anyone or have to make any sort of decisions. This stresses her out.

Can anyone please tell me what to expect and how I should deal with certain situations? Please give me some examples.

I AGREE DO NOT THE PATCH OPEN ( IT WELL KILL YOU ) OVER 4,832 DEATHS HAVE BEEN REPORTED OF OVERDOSE BY OPEN OVER EXPOSED TO THIS MEDICATION.

First, let me say that I am an alcoholic.

I also have ankylosing spondalytis and suffer from severe muscle spasms. I injured/re injured my back in Dec 08 and went to see a rheumatologist. He was given all of my history by my primary doctor who referred me to him. He should have known I was an alcoholic (sober 2 years).

Immediately, he gave me the Fentanyl. When he said "morphine", I told him I wasn't sure about that. He gave me few instructions and sent me on my way. I quizzed the C V S pharmacist more about the patch because I was still leary about taking the meds.

My back got better...I was scheduled to go back to work, so I (stupidly!) ripped the patch off my arm and tossed it because I was (get this) concerned about being able to drive and not be drowsy. Being drowsy was the least of my fears.

Four full days later, I fell apart...crying uncontrollably, begging for help, with strange sensations in my arms and sudden chills. I had never been told how to come off the drug gradually. I'm technically on Day 4 of the withdrawals and am feeling some better. I know I should have looked into the 'net information about Fentanyl more and I'll take the blame for that one, but I could kick the doc's ass (if I could kick that high) for not telling me how to come off of it.

God Bless You All.

I have a friend that is taking Duragesic and his doctor is supposedly weaning him off of it. This has been at least 12months that this has been happening. Does anyone know how long it takes to get off of this medication? Any input will help... thank you!

I've been on a 25MCG Fentynal patch, change every 48-72 hours and I'm also Rx's Vicoden 5MG/5OOMG, 2 tabs every 6 hours prn not exceeding 4 tabs a day and diazepam 2MG, 2 tabs BID prn for years now, and my meds have been changed to prn per my request, so if I could tolerate being without them I did have to take them if I wound up in the hospital.

I couldn't get my script filled due to a MD - pharmacy misunderstanding; its 5/23/09, a holiday weekend, and over 24 hours without a Fentynal patch on. I've had a few rough spots that were eased by taking my Vicoden and Diazepam, so is this just the calm before the storm, or I can get possibly get off the Fentynal patch if I keep holding out. I've had to go to the ER several years ago due to a similar MD- pharmacy issue, and I went 10 hours one time without a patch on, and both times where just horrible, intolerable and just pure torture!

Do I take the trip to the ER, or do I try to wait it out, and maybe be able to ditch one of the 18 meds I take daily? A MED. I'M OFTEN AND ALSO JUDGED HARSHLY FOR BEING ON... 8-| :$

I have been on 50mcg. Duragesic Patch for 8 years. I am pregnant and going off of it. I went down to 25mcg. for two months, then 12mcg. for one month, just stopped completely. I have had withdrawals the whole time to some degree. Right now it has been horrible. I am freezing cold but soaked with sweat, my legs can't stay still, very anxious, irritable, nausea and vomiting, headache, diarrhea, and insomnia. How long is this going to last? I can't take much more.

I have been on 50 mcgs patch for 6 years and I finally decided to come off the patch. I have a great doc that cut the dose to 25 mcgs and ordered methadone 10mg three times a day. I just started today so I'm a bit nervous... I tried on my own and ran into horrible leg cramps and pain everywhere. It was miserable and I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I really hope this works. I always felt so stupid all of the time when wearing the damn patch and I got sick of it. I want my life back.

Hi there, first off it's sad that your nickname is no life. In the last 24 months, i lost my mother to breast cancer a few weeks later I suffered a brain anurysm, had 2 brain surgeries and 3 months later a stroke from the anurysm. My sister just got diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma cancer and the list goes on. I'm thankful for my life and I hope you are too. I've had 21 surgeries all together was in an amtrak crash where a car tried to beat the train, 2 serious car accidents etc. I have osteoporosis, am legally blind in left eye from the brain surgery, have siezures, excrutiating back pain 24/7 and have been in surgical menapause since i was 25. I take the fentanyl patch also. prior to doing that I had a doc that wanted me to take darvocet and soma. of course it didnt work so I self medicated myself with those stupid somas till i'd pass out in my own plate of food. They withdrawals sound like they are from a horror film but when I went to the pain clinic and was put on the patches, it was the first time in years I felt like i had not just some control for my pain but also my life. If you are on them, you need to change them on time or you will get sweats etc. try not to turn your ac up to high where u get so freezing either. I wish I didnt have to be on any medication but if I have to, to have some kind of quality of life then so be it. at least i'm living and laughing again when I have good days. I think you'll have more good days if you take your meds on time. when my sis found out she had cancer she said "sis, if i'd known I only had 5 yrs to live, I sure as hell wouldn't be living like I have been" I replied then you better get busy girl cause none of us are guaranteed tomorrow so you better get living! My hope for all of us is that we all start living each day as if it were our last. love to all, Cher
