Hello there! I am a 49 years old woman and have just entered a menopause period. My mother had heart problems, so I wanted to know if I could expect heart problems as well considering my menopause!!!
As women grow older, the risk of heart disease rises. Coronary heart disease rates in women after menopause are 2–3 times higher than in women of the same age before menopause. It is possible that loss of natural estrogen may increase risks of heart disease even more after menopause. Even if it is so, it is not advised to have HRT in order to reduce risk of heart disease. Heredity may influence appearance of heart disease and children of parents with heart disease are more likely to develop it themselves. Other things that contribute to heart disease are increasing age, tobacco smoke, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, obesity and overweight, stress and too much alcohol.
