I have had this occur on several occasions. Every time it was the fear of being trapped - airline flight, elevator, small locked room. It came on in what could be described as a rush through my head. I tasted a metallic taste in my mouth and a burning sensation through my head. It has never lasted for more than a few seconds, to maybe at most, a minute. I attributed it to a combination of things. First, the rush of adrenaline that goes through your body when the 'fight or flight' response is triggered to a perceived danger. Second, taking the SSRI Paxil for anxiety. I didn't have the intense bodily responses like a rapid heart rate and fast, shallow breathing, so I figured the Paxil was blocking the physiological responses to the adrenaline. This is just my best guess at what could be happening.
What I am absolutely certain of, is this is not a response to amalgam fillings or any other kooky things you may read on different websites. These symptoms have only been triggered when I have stepped into a situation that I felt was out of my control and I risked the danger of being trapped.

I wish all of you the best of luck in trying to beat this. Life is too short and we don't have time for this bull$#!t. I have dreams of mountain climbing and exploring the great backcountry, and as many of you know, these anxiety issues can squash those dreams. I'm hoping to get a grip on this and get on with fullfilling my dreams, I hope you all are successful too.

I got exactly the same thing during a motorcycle accident. I was convinced I must have bitten my tongue. Mouth was OK.

I certainly had an impending sense of doom!

anxiety can cause metallic taste because the brain perception changes with stress and changes sensation from tastebuds. it can also make hands, feet numb and muscles twitch, etc. Very common with stress events

I have been experiencing a metal-like taste in my mouth for the last 4 months. It always happens when I think of something overwhelming. the taste seems to start on the outer edges of my tongue and then cover my tongue and move down my throat. Sometimes I wonder if I am really tasting metal (who really knows what metal tastes like?) or if I am feeling a weird sensation of some sort. I got my hormones checked, and they are all whacked....maybe thats it????? I have started bio-identical hormone therapy, and am hoping that will help out w/my stress. It seems we all have something in common......STRESS!!!!!!!

I believe many here are tasting adrenaline. It has a bitter metallic taste. I've just got over tasting it for a couple days myself. In my case, I attributed it to fairly severe stress.

Please note, it’s really important not to live with it too long as adrenaline is also sending signals to your heart to pump unnaturally hard. Prolonged adrenaline releases can curtail the longevity of the heart.

Yoga helps me.

Hope this helps.

This is absolutely true. I thought I was the only one that got this lol. I wish the best for any of you reading this. Just know that for the conditio, this is normal. Last of all, I have experienced bad acne while taking paxil over time. This is bc of a LACK or zinc. I do not know why it seems the paxil does this..but thanks to G-d after 8 years, my acne disappeared after taking 100mg zinc per day for the psat 3 days (and lots of water). Be careful with this bec it can throw off your iron and copper..but it appears from taking the paxil that I have excess copper in the system anyway.

Over the years I have had a hot bout with a metallic taste in my mouth but the last 4-5 weeks it doesn't seem to go away. I have to admit I am under alot of stress even my neck gets tight. It's scary to say the least but if stress can cause it at least I would know why!

it may be a vitamin D deficiency also. taking the vitamin helped me before but I am having stress problems mixed with other issues and the metallic taste is back and te vitamin D alone is not helping much... though drinking milk and eating yogurt help for short periods of time.. no the sun does not help me.. my body does not absorb vitamin d from the sun like it is suppose to ..

Carolse is absolutely right. Too much copper is causing both the taste AND the anxiety.   Your bodies are nutritionally out of balance and need zinc, magnesium, more b complex to name a few.  I would bet once your body is nutritionally balanced both your anxiety and copper taste will go away.

My opinion, don't see a MD to discuss this, most haven't been educated in this way.
