Treatments for Macular Degeneration can become complicated and there is no guarantee that they will be effective in all cases. Supplements that you can use to help treat your eyes before AMD ever develops could be the best way to deal with this condition.

Macular degeneration is defined as the progressive loss of vision due to the destruction of the macula and surrounding photo-receptors of the retina essential to maintain central vision [1]. There are no macular degeneration treatments to reverse macular degeneration but if you are able to catch the early signs of macular degenerationit is possible to utilize a number of different supplements to treat macular degeneration. This can be achieved through diet in some cases. We have already discussed how nutritional therapy for macular degeneration treatment is possible by eating dark leafy vegetables and carrots but here, we will focus on additional supplements that can help ascertain results [2].

Fatty Acid Supplements For Macular Degeneration

Doctors, mothers and any care-giver for that matter have always stated that eating fish was important for your health because of the high levels of omega-3 fatty acids found in this animal. Not only can omega-3 help improve cardiovascular function, it has been advertised as something that can also benefit those suffering from age-related macular degeneration.

In one investigation, it was determined that in over 3,200 patients who eventually developed AMD, a high dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acid was attributed with a 38 percent reduction in the development of late AMD. This investigation also stipulated that a diet of eating fish at least twice a week could reduce the development of early AMD by nearly 25 percent and the development of late AMD by nearly 33 percent on average. [3]

Unfortunately, even if omega-3 fatty acid can be beneficial to prevent the symptoms of AMD for a time, studies show that once you have the disease, the effects are not as impressive. In an investigation to determine the therapeutic benefit of continuing to take high levels of omega-3 once the macular degeneration has be diagnosed, this supplement to treat macular degeneration was not as beneficial. After looking at over 3,000 patients suffering from macular degeneration, there was no improvement in vision between groups treated with omega-3 fatty acid compared to control subjects. [4]

Vitamin Supplements for Macular Degeneration

It is no secret that vitamins are something that our physiology needs in order to maintain and promote healthy living. Eye health is no exception and patients can benefit from taking adequate levels of vitamins like Vitamin B12, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. In one study to determine if these vitamins could be a good way to improve visual health, over 4,000 patients were split into 4 different categorical groups. These groups were based on combinations of vitamins, antioxidants and zinc supplements to see the therapeutic effect of these compounds on the eye. In this investigation, it was determined that there was a statistically significant effect of zinc, antioxidants and vitamins in reducing the risk of worsening macular degeneration compared to these medications on their own. [5]

Some healthcare providers may incorrectly proclaim the effects of vitamin E alone on the health of your eye. It is a vitamin that has been proven to help maintain and support photo-receptors of your retina but when you observe patients suffering from macular degeneration, the visual damage is far greater than what vitamin E would be able to treat as a monotherapy. In one investigation, it was determined that 128 patients suffering from AMD taking vitamin E had no better outcome compared to patients in control groups. [6]

Supplements to Improve the Health of Your Eye: Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Up to this point, we have unfortunately seen some mixed reviews in highly-proclaimed therapies to preserve visual health and be useful macular degeneration treatments but there is still one important category of supplements to treat macular degeneration left to consider. Lutein and zeaxanthin are two supplements that are associated with healthy eyes. They are important in the perseverance of macular tissue and photo-receptors around the retina and results of investigations involving these substances on eye health are quite promising.

In this investigation, it was determined that patients who suffered from AMD and healthy subjects both noticed a significant improvement in the density of macular tissue compared to those who were not taking these supplements. These studies also showed that participants also noticed more extensive benefits of long-term use of lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation compared to those who took the supplement for only a short period of time. [7

After this investigation, it should be apparent that there is nutritional therapy for macular degeneration treatment that can make a difference. Although fish oils and vitamins can be beneficial to prevent some of the symptoms of macular degeneration, lutein and zeaxanthin are two supplements that you should try out immediately to help improve the function of your eye. Make sure you include these in your supplements to treat macular degeneration.
