The IMIR (internal medicine in-review) Board preparatory question and answer app is available for download for free from the Google Play Store for all Android devices. This medical app is a comprehensive study tool for the student and specialist, which offers clinically relevant, Board reviewed questions and answers in internal medicine.

The IMIR app was developed by ETAS (Educational Testing and Assessment Systems) and they produce Board-relevant exam preparatory study systems in multiple medical specialties. Features of the online version of the Internal Medicine In-Review programme include a comprehensive study guide that can be accessed in an electronic PDF format, as well as the companion Online Study System. This online version, at www.InReviewIM.com, is ideal for a customizable learning experience.

The IMIR app is available to download and use for free if you are a medical student, internal medicine resident and internal medicine programme director. This medical application provides all the essential information needed to prepare for Board exams using interactive and engaging formats.

Features of the app include the following:

  • The clinically relevant questions and answers in internal medicine are Board certified, and they are written and reviewed by a faculty of esteemed physician educators.
  • There are 5 new Board preparatory questions delivered directly to the app on a daily basis.
  • Detailed answers and explanations are given for each question.
  • Real-time quiz results are given to the user.
  • New questions are available on-demand when you log in with your IMIR account.
  • No internet connectivity is needed to access this app’s features, so you can study while you're on-the-go.

Using the app

This is an extremely easy app to use and navigate around since it only contain a few pages. A useful feature is that the app forces you to hold your device in the landscape position, which is extremely helpful since you will be reading and answering questions.

The app opens up to the home page that explains what the app is all about. There is a "review questions" button that takes you straight to the question bank of the app.

The next tab is the "Q&A" button that accesses 20 Board certified questions together with their answers when they are clicked on. Once a question is answered, you will be notified if you are correct or incorrect. If the answer is incorrect, you will still be allowed to access the correct answer and a helpful explanation will be given as to the reason for the correct answer. When you've answered the first 20 questions, you will be shown an option to download 5 more questions. When you click on this button, 5 new questions will be downloaded to the bank and the word "NEW" is added to the beginning of the question.

The next tab looks like an "excel spreadsheet" and here you will find a button that takes you to the online site of the programme. You can register for free online and this will give you access to many more questions, as well as the helpful study guide and online study system for internal medicine Board exams. The home page also shows how many questions have been answered correctly and what your percentage of correct answers are as well.

The following tab looks like a speech-bubble and this allows the user to give the developers of the app and ETAS feedback regarding the application and the questions which are made available.

The final tab is a settings button where you can switch notifications on or off, and where you can logout of your online account.

Usefulness

The developers mention that only internal medicine residents and specialist physicians can access the app, but I am a general practitioner and just clicked on "other" when I registered online. There's no real way to determine if you are specialising in internal medicine or not, so really anyone can register online and use the app then.

For me, this a great way to supplement my clinical knowledge by having access to these questions and answers. For a medical student this app would be an invaluable tool for their educational purposes.

Verdict:

For
  • This app is free to download and use. Registering for an online account is also free and you don't necessarily have to be an internal medicine resident or specialist in order to do so.
  • The app is extremely easy to navigate through and use since there are only a few pages to access.
  • The questions are easily accessible and the answers are readily available. An explanation for the answers is also given.
  • Questions and answered have been reviewed by Board certified specialists.
  • When you are done with the 20 questions that are pre-loaded in the app, you can download 5 more questions at a time to answer.
Against
  • The text of the characters in the questions are extremely small and this is a problem when reading long and complicated questions.
  • The questions are all in text with no images or videos to access in order to help answer the question. The reason for this though would be that this is how written papers are completed.
