Okay,

I have all of the exact same symptons as all of you! I've been to multiple doctors to find out what the problem is! At an ENT about a year ago he found a benign pulip on my vocal chord, thinking this was the problem, I obviously had it removed.... A year later I've still got the lump in my throat and am constantly trying to hack something up but long behold nothing is ever generated from my consistant throat clearing and hacking!!

I also get extremely anxious and irritated wondering what is wrong with me, and will I ever find out! I am from the U.S. now living for a year in Australia and though I'm supposed to be on a working holiday haveing the time of my life, I stuck thinking about actually seeking medical attention for this stupid annoyance!! I beleive I may be allergic to onions, but my partner now has the exact same problem and our diets are prettty much exactly the same...

We also think it may be alcohol seeing as how we drink pretty regularly, we are going to stop drinking for about two weeks and see what happens...

I hope something works because as like I'm sure most of you it is driving me crazy even at this very moment!!

Please if anyone has any further information or would just like to discuss symptoms you can email me at _[removed]_.

Thank you!

Yes, you can be allergic to tea any time I have anything with green tea in it my throat swells up and I have an issue with breathing and become dizzy. I understand allergies and know that you can be allergic to anything at anytime! As for the girl who had the pain and the lump like issue in her throat, I also experienced the same thing after taking a supplement with the green tea in it for several days.

I have had similar problems. I have been to an allergy specialist but they could not determine what caused my reaction. For me, it starts with a sharp pain in my throat and then spreads rapidly making it difficult to swallow. As a child, I never had any problems with any foods but only recently seem to have developed this problem. Fortunately for me the first time it happened, I had benadryl on hand and was able to alleviate the pain/constriction in my throat. It did, however ache for a few days after the incident. The anxiety however is probably the worst- not knowing what caused/causes it. I would advise always having some antihistamine like benadryl around just in case since the progression can be sudden.

Went into ER this morning. Had a sore throat for a week before, took a Z-pac for 3 days, then this morning I awoke with a swollen throat and my avula in the back of my throat was so swelled and actually hung down so low it touched the very back of my tounge giving me a gagging/choking sensation. Doc described it as I looked like I had a balloon in my throat.

The ER doc said I could be having an allergic reaction to the Z Pack(zythromax) and also maybe the ibuprofen, as well. He told me to discontinue the Z-pack and the ibuprofen. Just take tylenol for now. Absolutely no aspirin or nsaids.

He also advised I keep a food diary just in case it was from eating something I'm allergic too, so I am doing that.

They gave me an IV with benydryl and steroids for the inflamation. They sent me home with MethyPrednisolone 4 mg for the next 6 days. Also, he has me taking 10 mg of Clariton and Tylenol as needed.

He did a mono test= negative and a strep test (initially negative, but will also culture).

I never even thought of ibuprofen as a possibility, as I've been taking it for years for inflammation. I have also had Z-packs before with no difficulty.

I will keep a food diary. Only thing I ate differently was barbecue sauce at Mcdonalds...I usually have mustard.

Swollen throat sensation after spices? Sounds to me like a reaction triggered by the presence of oral herpes. Get tested.

I have a friend who has had severe reaction to soy products and he told me that he gets the same problem from Chai Tea. I did research and found that the culprit must be green cardamom, a spice from the ginger family. If you search for cardamom allergies, you can find plenty of information about it.

I am allergic to tea. I drank it for years and all of a sudden when I drink it my tongue and throat swell up. Since I have many other food allergies with much the same reaction, I can tell you people can be allergic to tea.

I'm having what i think is an effect of an allergic reaction to Milled Flaxseed. Ever hear of anyone allergic to that?
I put Flaxseed on my cereal per my personal trainers recommendation and I immediately felt wierd in my throat and itchy and in my ears also. i had the hiccups off and on for about 10 hours after I ate that, usually I get the hiccups when I am about to puke. Yesterday I woke up with a bad sore throat and today it is even worse. Nothing seems to help it. What should I do? Tomorrow if its still bad, I might go to the minute clinic to see if someone can tell me whats up.

Thought I would share I had the swelling issue and er issue after eating or drinking certain things and the doctors explained it was acid reflux. There is reflux which causes heart burn and a kind of acid reflux that goes into the throat for some (it's noted on some
websites as a globus feeling). Sleeping with upper body elevated and staying away from things like caffeine, fatty foods, onions, eggplant, citrus fruits etc help a great deal. Your diet can help
it go away if this is what it is for you....

I have been fighting with the problem in my throat for almost a year now. It started with the feeling of something stuck in my throat , but I could still breathe fine. I have had an Ultrasound on my thyroid and throat, a barrium swallow test, and an Endoscopy with Bravo study.
Everything has come back negative. The pain has gradually moved into my chest also, making it feel like a chip is stuck.
I have been on GERD medication (zantac, prilosec, etc). No one can find a problem... until my husband came up with my supplement/ vitamins. There is on that contains Evening Primrose, I stopped taking it and took a little Bendryl to see if it was an allergic reaction. Almost overnight the symptoms started to decline, it isnt completely gone but I need to give it some time- I,ve been on the supplements for about a year , so there can be a large amount still in my system. The one thing that no one will tell you is.. if you are taking vitamins or a supplement the herbs that they use, sometimes they use a wide variety of the plants, they can be the same name but different in the chemical make up - this also happens in the teas and herbal drinks that are out on the market. So, if you have something going on that they can't diagnose - look at the herbals and even some spices you have been taking in... it just may be the problem..

Every time I drink Chai tea I get itchy I used to get the Pacific Vanilla Chai Tea Latte Mix and Panera Bread's Chai Tea Latte, and now just got a Iced Chai Tea from an Indian restaurant and my skin is itchy again. I have checked the ingredients and the most common things are Cinnamon, Ginger, Black Tea and Honey. I get the Dunkin Donuts Vanilla Chai and have no problem which is weird. The only different ingredient in all of the others that DD's Vanilla Chai don't have is Ginger! I think the only thing I can think of is it may be the ginger. The DD website doesn't mention what kind of tea it uses though. It just says instant and not black like the others. As far as the cinnamon goes I have cinnamon on other things and don't notice an itch but only with the chai latte's. It could be the milk too since I have smoothies and am not sure if those make me itch or not yet. I thought I may have gotten itchy a couple times from those as well. Could it be the vanilla? I use a vanilla creamer in all my drinks like that and they use vanilla in all those drinks I have mentioned. Ugg this is hard cuz I LOVE Chai Lattes. The itch is so annoying and uncomfortable too. No hives just the itchiness.

PS I forgot to mention that I have had green tea in the past and have become quite itchy to that as well and no longer drink it. Hmm that makes me curious now. I am fine with herbal teas though.

MnMommy2/Renee, I believe I have had a similar reaction to flaxseed.  I used to add flaxseed to my smoothies and would notice that the inside of my mouth would itch and I would feel funny.  I stopped using it after I figured that that must be the problem.  Be aware also because flaxseed is also linseed oil (which is used in other foods and also in some cosmetics, haircare and skin care, even hand creams, so be sure to check these). When I used a hair leave-in treatment that contained linseed/flax, I had similar feelings/reactions.

Everyone else....I have had mainly issues with my eyes recently (the last month or 2).  They get itchy, red and sometimes puffy.  I am not sure if it's related to the tea or not.  For me, I have drank many times tea daily (usually just one cup a day) and never had issues.  My eyes could be related to my contacts or new eye makeup as well.  I'm just not sure.  I like to have some tea daily because of it's many health benefits, including reducing allergies, coincidentally.  However, now I am afraid because I am not sure if that is the cause of my eye allergies or not.  Outside of the flaxseed, I am unaware of any other allergies, other than seasonal/sinus, that I have.  I had the eye reaction again 2 days ago...so did not drink tea yesterday nor today (I also am wearing my glasses, so no contacts and no makeup) and my eyes feel a lot better today and are looking much clearer and the lids look normal)....I also feel good today and was going to have some tea to prove to myself that it was not the tea (I was also encouraged to do so by a friend and also my husband, figuring it would allay my fears), but now, after reading this, I am wondering if I should forgo the tea for a few weeks and see if my symptoms are gone, then I can figure it was probably the tea?

On the lump in the throat sensation...this can also be a classic anxiety/panic symptom, along with the chest tightness, etc.   ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***

A person can be allergic to almost anything, even things that are considered "good" for you. If you felt like your throat swelled, I would not advise drinking this tea again. Also, what did you ingest prior to the tea, could it have been that? If it is still painful, I would get it checked, was the tea too hot and burned your throat?
