I dont like winters and I must say that spring is also not my favorite time of the year. This is because I get colds easily but they dont leave quickly. I have used several medications past years, suggested by both friends and doctors and right now I take Primatene. I suppose it works fine, but I would still like to know about good alternative to Primatene. Is there any?

Why would you change anything if it works? Primatene is a drug used to deal not only with colds and flu, but also with hay fever symptoms. It helped me when I had breathing problems two years ago. It constricts blood vessels and reduces swelling in air paths. This all helps you to breathe more easily and makes your cough more productive. Its generic name is ephedrine, so I guess alternatives should just have different brand names.

Primetine works as well as prescription enhalers. Here is the problem. The drug companys don't like it because it costs a lot less than prescription enhalers. They have put a lot of time and money in false info, so the enhaler could be pulled from the market. I was told that even if the enhaler becomes environmentaly friendly, there will be no more over the counter enhalers. The drug companys win again, at the expence of the public. Don't let doctors tell you that it doesn't work. They are simply telling you what the drug companys tell them. Contact the EPA and tell them to back off. It's your life not theirs. A Primetine user

I know this is an old thread, but I'll post this info for the benefit of anybody who happens to find it, like I did.

Primatene is gone. Off the market, with no replacement from its maker.   I just found a product called "Asthmanefrin" on the CVS Pharmacy site, and the reviews are very good.   There seems to be a problem with the inhaler clogging after a few months, but they say the product works as well as Primatene.  I intend to try it for my asthma.

However, if your interest is in colds or flu, that's not the product you want.   That will give only symptomatic relief.  Instead, try Nutribiotic nasal spray.  You can easily find it online.  It contains GSE, which is a natural anti-viral and antibiotic.  It cleared up a nasty sinus infection for me after the doctor's big guns didn't touch it.   But the Nutribiotic did the job.   I don't remember my sinuses being so clear!  Took about 5 days and I was breathing easily.  I suspect I'd had a low-grade infection in there for years, because the sensation of air filtering through my sinuses was very unfamiliar  to me.

It can also head off a cold or sore throat.  Just use it as a nasal spray for nose problems, and a throat spray if you feel a sore throat coming on.  Instead of suffering for a week, it's more like two days, or not even that, if you catch it early enough.  It's pretty amazing stuff!
