I wish I could say that my mother is just going through period in her life, but it seems that it affected her more than we thought. She has started explaining to us that she hears some voices, not recognizable but no one is near her! We tried to explain her that those are just some hallucinations but she is certain in what she heard. Are hallucinations often in schizophrenia?

Well, hallucinations (especially auditory ones) might easily be related to schizophrenia, but you must be very careful in these situations. If possible, try to persuade your mother to see a specialist, and that might be difficult if she really is developing some psychological issues. Then again, if you react in time, the consequences might be only mild, and she could easily return to her normal behavior…
