My friend is a super healthy, strong athletic 30-year old man in need of some any and all advice because he doesn't have the ability to go to a Dr. (no $ and no benefits). He has had joint pain in his hips, knees and shoulders, and although his recent knee and shoulder pain can be explained by recent activities, he has no explanation for something that looks like bruises on both sides of his hips. They don't hurt, but it started showing up a few weeks ago and started spreading. Because of the joint pain he is also experiencing a loss of strength and his sleep patterns are very irregular (which is very unusual). He's never been into drugs, doesn't drink and is very conscious of what he eats and drinks tons of water & takes vitamins. Any thoughts? He wouldn't complain about pain unless it was bad so I'm worried...

Hi Sabine: This sounds like a couple of different things!
1. Rheumatoid Arthritis
http://www.webmd.com/rheumatoid-arthritis/guide/rheumatoid-arthritis-symptoms
2. Malabsorption Problems
http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec09/ch125/ch125a.html
3. Hemophilia
http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/hemophilia/hemophilia_signs.html
I know things are difficult with the healthcare system down there, BUT either way, he needs to be checked out by a doctor! I TRULY think it is RA! BUT if it is either of the other 2, we are dealing with VERY dangerous illness's IF unchecked!
So there is NO option for someone with no insurance or monies where you are?!!!! There' isn't ANY free clinic or anything like that at all? If not this is a disgrace!!! But this is his health!!! So please keep me informed OK? Good luck and health to both of you!
