I had a leep performed 4 days ago and it was the most excruciating and painful experience of my life. The shots that are supposed to numb the cervix did nothing! I felt all six shots, the scraping of my cervix, the cauterization, EVERYTHING!! It was like being raped with a red hot poker and I am outraged that the medical community has such a lack luster opinion on this procedure and even more outraged that they are allowed to continue with the procedure even when they are fully aware that the patient can feel it! My doctor knew that I was in pain and yet he continued anyway. I have had nightmares, can't eat or sleep and every time I close my eyes all I can see is those horrific moments and when I try to talk about it its like going through it all over again. I know that in time I will recover from the mental terror that has seized me the last couple of days but I don't feel that other women should have to experience this. There should be a law that forces doctors to have to STOP this procedure as soon as they are aware that the patient can feel it. It is a surgery, and if you don't respond to the local anesthesia then they should be forced to schedule the procedure in a hospital where they can knock you out completly. As I read some of the blogs and posts out there I see that there are many who have had a "positive" experience, but I ask you is it really positive if your sex life is never the same again? or if it causes you to have abnormal bleeding the rest of your life? Oh yeah and good luck at having children after the LEEP, sure you can get pregnant but your ability to carry and concieve naturally has been severly compromised. And to all those women who have had abnormal periods after the leep and are being told by thier doctors that the leep has nothing to do with it? Thats BS! Think about it, they take a chunk of your cervix in a cruel and inhumane way and everything is supposed to be "OK"? Get a second, third opinion and then go see a naturopathic or holistic healer, at least they actually listen to you and take everything into account when it comes to your health. Everything you do from what you eat, your habits, stress level, the type of work you do, It is all inter-related and any doctor that can't see that should not be a doctor. I am asking that any women who has had this awful experience Please tell other women, we need to put a stop this and something needs to change.

I really wish, and you seem like you don’t have idea how much some of us do, that there was a way to cure things like cervical cancer in loving, peaceful harmony of naturalistic or holistic “ordination” by having long, meaningful talks with understanding person who will give advices about inner peace and wellbeing. No more “taking out chunks of your cervix” for no reason at all…
All people handle pain differently – some people endure long chemotherapies and radiation and still they are grateful for even a chance to live longer. Or some women manage to live for years after their complete uterus and/or ovaries are removed because of the cancer. Do you realize that you are suggesting that women go against and deny themselves a treatment to remove abnormal cervical cancer cells by having non toxic LEEP procedure (unlike chemo) even though most women don’t feel much pain during or after it – like you said yourself after all, just because of your feelings?

Have you ever had this done to you? Let me stick a hot wire up inside your genitalia while your fully aware and can feel it and torture you with it. Do you think you would enjoy that? Probably not and If you had fully read my posting you would have picked up that I am saying that if the women can feel the procedure the doctor should stop and reschedule to do the procedure at a hospital where she will be fully sedated an unaware of the horrifiying pain that is taking place!! I have lost 4 close relatives to cancer and I have seen what people go through, they went through the chemo and it gave them maybe an extra 2 yrs and in that time they suffered more from the treatment, that didn't work, than the cancer itself. Cancer is a vicious disease and I do believe that the cure is out there somewhere and someday it will be found, but in the meantime we deal with it the best way our society knows how.

Herbgirl78, I just had this procedure done yesterday. I took off the whole day thankfully and I was sent home today because I don't think I fully recovered from what happened. It really is horrifying, I cried the whole time and almost felt like the nurses thought I was overreacting. I told my fiance I don't think I could do that again without being sedated. I know where you are coming from. I dreaded it since I was informed I needed to have a LEEP........but I had NO idea it was going to be that bad. Hopefully you are doing better now. I hope I can forget the pain of that whole ordeal myself.

Guest, I am sorry to hear that you had to go through this awful procedure, I wish they would outlaw it or at least properly educate women. I am doing better now, a little over 4 months later. The only good thing that came out of it was that it caused me to completely change my life. My sex life has almost returned to normal but I have yet to have a period. It took 3 months to "get over" the emotional trauma but I refuse to go to a gynecologist, I will not let any one violate me like that again! So I have taken my health into my own hands and done a lot of research and it turns out that this procedure isn't necessary!! You can treat it by increasing your folic acid intake to 5-10mg a day with vitamin B12 and B6, Vitamin A and Vitamin C!! ( Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, by Michael Murray, N.D and Joseph Pizzorno, N.D) Something so simple, non invasive and has shown to work for millions of women. Incorporating Lots of fresh vegetables and fruit and limiting or completely eliminating processed foods will have a dramatic effect on your health. Because of what happened I took my health and well being very seriously and have done plenty of research, right now I am on day 13 of a water fast and have had many positive things happen, for one my vision has improved from - 5.00 to -4.75, the scar that I had from an ulcer on my eye was almost gone and the scar in my right eye from a previous injury was completely gone, my teeth have also improved dramatically, the chipped tooth I had is healing itself and the enamel is rebuilding and I have lost almost 30lbs!! I have been absolutely shocked at how quickly my body is healing, If I didn't see it for myself I would probably have trouble believing that water fasting is that beneficial, despite all the negative sites and "professionals" that tell you how bad it is for you, It is not, our current medical society WANTS you to be sick, they treat the symptoms, not the cause!! Not everyone can do a water fast safely, do your research and decide. Whatever you do try to educate yourself on natural healing methods and healthy living, it will transform your life for the better. Good Luck!!

I had the LEEP done yesterday as an outpatient procedure in a surgery center, and was asleep the whole time. I'm sorry your experience was c**p - hopefully that'll be the last time u experience that!

I am so sorry for your ordeal! I had seen some women how they were forced to have some painful procedures, just because doctors think, women can take it. I used to be a nurse, and I was traumatized by just seeing how women suffer. They found a polyp in my uterus, so they want to do a biopsy without sedation or general anaesthesia. They said I will be OK with Advil. I said to them it is a joke, no way! I heard women screaming during that procedure when I was a nurse, and there is no way they are going to do that procedure without sedation or general anaesthesia. We, women should speak up, for the barbarian treatments they put us through. When a man needs a urinal bladder exam by scope, he is sedated, so why are they torturing us, women?!

I just want to share my experience on this page because I know that before my LEEP I was searching the internet for information... luckily I didn't come across this post or I would've been scared to death.
My experience with LEEP (two of them) have both been very positive. I was put under sedation. This is definitely the best thing to do because you have no feeling and no memory of the procedure... if your doctor doesn't do this procedure under anesthesia I highly recommend finding one who does. I wasn't put under general anesthesia - I was breathing on my own the whole time and woke up quickly with no drowsiness or nasty side effects of general. I was prescribed 600mg Motrin and 5mg oxycodone. I only took one Motrin the night of as a preventative method and didn't need another pill for the rest of the recovery period. I only experienced light cramping, with discharge beginning about 2 days after the procedure and lasting for a couple of weeks. I began light exercise 3 days after and was back to normal levels of working out after about a week.
Anyway, just wanted to share a positive experience of LEEP because I know how anxious many people are before the procedure, and internet message boards are often filled with worst case scenario stories.

I had a Leep Procedure last Monday, or attempted one. The Dr went to inject me with Lidocaine. I immediately felt a head rush of dizziness, confusion, metallic taste, numbness to my lips and tongue, blurry vision, vertigo, ringing in the ears, shaky (all signs and symptoms of lidocaine toxicity) and the most excruciating back pain, like I was having back labor (I remember cause I had my daughter 6 months prior). They had to stop and took me 40 minutes to recover. I felt traumatized and violated. They want to put me under instead next time.

Most people who have a bad experience do so because of poor pain management or non-functional anesthesia. Performing gynecological surgery in this manner is assault and battery against women. It is unfortunate that incompetent doctors have no accountability for this and blame the victim by citing anxiety. If you find yourself in this situation in the middle of surgery in this situation with an incompetent doctor, revoke consent for treatment and report it. Women should not have to use forums to report assault and battery.

Your evaluation of this person's post is demanding and demoralizing to all women who have experienced traumatic ob gym procedures. The procedure is not supposed to go as she described and the accountability for this lies with the doctor. Stop blaming victims of medical battery.

I had a LEEP procedure done at my OB l/GYN office. I t was so painful. The MD said the setup would be uncomfortable. I t was painful and worse than the colopscopy. Then I felt many painful pinches. The MD said it would be only a couple of pinches to numb the cervix. There were many more painful pinches. My heart was racing so fast. I had tears in my eyes and I wanted to break out crying. The LEEP was not a good experience and people should look into holistic treatment without the LEEP.
