I have a friend and we were talking few days ago. He told me interesting thing about problem called balanitis. He said it is an inflammation of the glans of the penis. It usually causes redness and blotchy rash on the glans, sometimes with a discharge, and that was exactly problem I was complaining about. Now he worries me because he said I should visit my doctor. Off course, I am ashamed of this condition, so I would like if you could tell me more about this.

First I have to tell you that balanitis is not sexually transmitted, but results from an overgrowth of organisms which are normally present on the skin of the glans. The condition most commonly occurs in men who have a foreskin. The best explanation of this is to say the environment under the foreskin is warm and moist. Now you could guess how these conditions often favor the growth of the organisms that cause balanitis.
These organisms are especially likely to multiply and cause inflammation if moisture is allowed to persist under the foreskin longer. This may occur if you have not washed for a couple of days, and sometimes after sexual activity, whether it was vaginal, oral or anal. One common organism associated with balanitis is yeast known as Candida albicans, and this problem may occur because of excessive growth of Candida. The aim of treatment is to keep the glans and foreskin clean and dry to make it difficult for organisms to grow. Medications are rarely necessary, and are usually less effective than good hygiene measures. You should slide your foreskin back towards your body once a day, ideally when you have a shower. Do it until the glans is completely uncovered, but do not use any force.
