Hi Ashley, the hard lump is the remnants of the cystic damage aka the scar tissue. My doctor recommended massaging the area gently daily to get to soften and go away. Of course I never did that and I still have the scar tissue but it does not effect me that much. Just think of it when you have a deep cut on yourself you always have a scar, either it will eventually go away or stick around.

Just thought I would say that I had the left bartholins cyst removed yesterday and although I was terrified after reading lots of negative things about it and the pain afterwards. I have to say the op went really well, yes it's a little uncomfortable on sitting, however I am not in pain and healing is going well. I am not on lots of pain killers so fingers crossed it will all of healed completely in 4weeks as the consultant said it would. At least I now don't have the big sore lump I had before, the area is now normal!!

Like Marie I had my surgury about 10 years ago and as she said... as we go into menopause we need all the lubrication we can get. Ever since the surgery intercourse has been painful upon entry - once entered I was fine. Just recently though it is becoming painful during the entire time. In the past when I inquired about this problem I was told that there was just a little inflammation ... going to go get checked out soon with this continuous pain though. If I had it to do all over again I WOULD NOT have the gland removed and I had some very painful cysts in the past. This is just my experience and my opinion ... everyones experience is unique! Good luck ladies!

Would like the contact info for your surgeon, considering having the gland removed, after having 2 unsuccessful marsup and multiple in office drainage, I think it's time to look into a more permanent fix, now left with a lot of scar tissue still have to deal with these cyst, so I'm now ready to consider removing the gland. Was intercourse painful after the gland removal? Did you have vaginal dryness and did the the scar tissue go away.

Hi, the doctor I used is Dr. Kocur, he is located in Manhattan and Scarsdale NY, he has a website now:

. He is very experienced in this and has done these surgeries for a long time now. He is also very personable and will go above and beyond to make sure you are OK, even gave me his cell phone, would let me call him while I was hysterically crying at 11 pm at night with an emergency.
There is dryness but I think the main problem was arousal in the first place for me. Before the cyst was removed I always felt pain when aroused. I still feel it and I think its my other gland as well so I can't say my experience is the same for all. There is scar tissue but you learn to get around it, some of it will go away, Dr. Kocur also has offered to surgically remove it (since during my op he discovered how deep I was, he had no choice but to incise in multiple areas ) but I am tired of going under the knife. To the other poster who regrets their decision to remove the gland, just remember the many countless sitz baths, the pain, the waddling, the uncomfortableness. The lack of moisture and scar tissue is nothing in comparison. You can have a normal life and intercourse. Lube was made for a reason if that is a concern, there is nothing to be ashamed of when you deal with that.

Hello Everyone. I had a bartholin cyst drained about 3 times. Once it was done as a marsupialization (sown open so the liquid would not form). It came back once more. This was almos a year ago. I am currently pregnant and have not had any more "episodes" but I was thinking about getting the whole glad removed to avoid future cysts from forming. I wonder if it there is no cyst at the time of surgery, maybe the recovery time will be shorter and it will be easier to remove since there is no swelling. The doctor suggested I remove it because if it occurs again, the scar tissue will be so bad that I will have to go to a specialized surgeon to have it removed completely anyway and it will be worse. I am taking 2 months off after the baby and I'm considering having this procedure. Any imput on this would be great! This form has been very informative :)
Additionally, I am thinking about getting my tubes tied, but I have always had a heavy period and every woman tells me it only gets worse which would mean I would probably need to get on birth control to control my period in which I really would not need to get my tubes tied. The point of getting me tubes tied is to not have to worry about birth control or giving additional hormones to my body for another 25 years or so. Anyone have this issue? Thanks ladies!

I have had bartholin cysts and abscesses for 10 years now. The cyst is only painful when it turns into an abcess and is infected. When mine have burst on their own they will continue to drain themselves for the next couple of days but antibiotics are typically needed to ward off a more serious infection.

Thank you for what you wrote on your experience with the removal of the gland. I have have the recurring cyst for almost 11 years now and have finally decided to have the gland removed. I, like you, searched the internet and always read the "horror" stories. It sure was nice to see that you have had a speedy recovery and are doing well!

I wanted to update everyone on my progress. in case you haven't read my previous posts, here's my full story.
Last April i got my first monster of a absence. They tried to drain it and i had a catheter in for 30 days to no success. My body didn't react to the antibiotics either and we played the cut & wait game for a few months. In the mean time i was also diagnosed with Cervical Cancer. Since i already had to go under the knife, my Dr and I decided that it would be a good time to to remove the cyst and gland.
A week after the surgery a new cyst appeared on the same side but different area. This time it was closer to the Vulva and was infected. They cut it to drain it. From there I went through 6 weeks anti-biotics, 12 Cuts, 17 visits to the wound clinic and the infection and wound would not heal. Under the knife i went again. They had to remove the cycst, the gland which they didn't get the first time, and my entire labia because it was infected. I had a 5 inch u tern of stitches and looked like Frankenstein. But i automatically felt better. I had to stay on bed rest for 5 weeks. My Stitches tore the first time i left the house and had an open wound again for 3 more weeks until they finally decided to stitch it back up.
As of Valentine's Day I'm stitch free, wound free and cancer free. This may sound like a horror story, but it's not. It took a bad turn, but I'm glad i had it removed. I get to sit again, Wear Jeans and live my life which i wasn't able to do for the past 10 months. Hopefully i get up the nerve to restart my sex life again too.
Good luck to Everyone who reads this.
